    Hey

After attempting, unsucessfully due to Macrovision, to copy from my DVD (Mustek/Yukai 320) to VHS, I then tried to copy to my Sony DV Camera. No luck, as Sony has implemented some sort of copy protection.

OK, so I know feed the DVD through the Camera and into the PC via firewire, which is captured as raw DV .avi using Ulead Video Studio (I think that's its name anyway).

My next step would be to play from the PC back into the Camera, (again via firewire and Ulead) thereby having this DVD on DV tape in my camera. But the camera won't have a bar of it, and this copy protection notification again appears.

    ????

I know I can copy on to DV tapes in this fashion, because I have done so with other .avi files (e.g. from the DV tapes in the first place, or just other random files) so it can be done, but not with these particular files.

Is there some sort of copy-protection coded within these files, even though the DVD signal came through the camera and is now stored as .avi on my h/d?

If so, can I do anything to get around this?

Now I'm pissed... because I simply want another copy of my DVD, as I do not have a DVD player in every room of the house... there's nothing illegal in that is there?

    Cheers

The stored .avi is taking up gigs and gigs in my H/D, just wanting to get it on to tape.

    Cheers

If your camera supports DV IN then look here:

I don't understand how you went from this to saying you captured it through firewire to Ulead. If the camera won't record it, then you can't passthrough to the computer.

Did you see the video in Ulead while you were capturing?

  5. Two sugestions

1 - I have a Sony D8 camera and "COPY INHIBIT" shows when i try to "record" any video with inverse field order than camera (like DVD videos). But this copy protection is only when i try to record, not when I passthrough the video to camera. When I want to record an avi to my camera tape which causes copy protected, i need to inverse the filed dominance of this file (or view the settings of my project; if has some field wrong, etc).

2- Some cameras (in EUROPE) has a DV IN disabled, and if youi have it, youi cannot export the video back to the camera.

I'm having the same problem. How do you go about inversing the field dominance of the file? Sorry if this is a dumb question....THANKS!

Sounds like you guys had different experience than I have. My passthough will not work on any source with Macrovision. Sorry if my info was incorrect.

    Cheers for the replies everybody.

Stelios, I believe this is pretty much what I am doing, ... admittidley using version 3? of the software, but I think it works the same. I haven't read the pages entirely though. Cheers.

EricB, I can actually pass it straight through the camcorder and record on to the PC via Fireware. The camera won't allow recording (COPY INHIBIT), but as far as I can see the PC just accepts the feed anyhow. Yep I can see it on the Camera screen at this time too.

Paradebh, yep that sounds good. Like gpeter5592, I have no idea what this means. Can you elaborate?

P.S. Edited to say that I do not have a DVD drive in my PC, hence the use of the camcorder.

    Cheers

  9. INVERSE FIELD DOMINANCE:

IN Premiere - right click on video (in timeline) and chose video options / field options / Reverse field dominance.

In Virtualdub - got to filters / (add) / field swap

Ulead Video Studio - i don't know (i don't use it) see this link to understand a little - http://www.ulead.com/learning/video3/page1.htm

All of this need render, until now i don't know any software wicth inverse field dominance on the fly (without render). Try to test others VHS (sVHS) players, sometimes works. I have two videos and one of than sometimes capture in inversed fields (lower field, not upper field)[/url]

  10. I use this metod above to copy small avi files to my camera. If you want a DVD copy (large avi) your patience would be chinese because the render will take a lot of time.

You are right Eric B. Sony camcoder can view the video from DVD, (like a TV) but cannot record to a Tape. You need to passthough the video via camera to computer (firewire). The copy protection is in SONY CAMERA!

OK, managed to borrow another DVD player... a Philips this time, and it allowed me to record straight to VHS, so I've worked around this problem for the moment, but would like to know what I can do for future copying.

    Cheers
