  1. I have dvds that I made from old full size vhs tapes.
I'd like to extract short clips for posting and sharing. The dvds have .vob files on them.
What is the quickest, easiest way to grab those 2-3 minute clips?

  2. mpg2cut2: mark in, mark out, save this clip. Repeat.

  3. Thanks, I'll try it tonight.

  4. Note that Mpg2cut2 only allows cuts on I frames (about 1/2 seconds apart on DVD VOB) and the GUI is ugly (yet functional). If you need more accurate cuts you'll want to use a program like VideoRedo. It can cut on any frame and will only re-encode cut GOPs -- ie, it will not lose quality on the majority of your video. It's not free but you may be able to make all your cuts in the trial period.

  5. Accuracy isn't an issue. These are simple home videos. The quality isn't exactly top shelf, given that they were shot in the late 1980s, and transferred to dvd a few years ago. Chances are I won't use whatever software much, so freeware is attractive. I don't mind spending a little, but I don't want some expensive suite meant for a serious hobbiest/professional.
    I'll try mpg2cut2.

  6. Thank you! mpg2cut2 is amazing. Maybe a little clunky, but not too hard to figure out, and does exactly what I wanted!

  7. Glad it worked out for you. I use the program when I need to cut MPG/VOB files.
