I like both XINE and Mplayer under Linux, Mplayer is my favorite though.

  3. I use WinDVD 4 but only use it for testing whether my VCD/SVCDs came out alright. To watch them I use standalone player.

I use PowerDVD for my DVD-ROM and I also have two other applications to play the movie on my PC. They are PCfriendly and InterActual. These two were installed with the DVD movies rented or purchase.

The InterActual application was installed with the purchase of Star Wars, The Phantom Menace.

I rarely use the others as I mainly use PowerDVD. I think PowerDVD is the best. I haven't tried WinDVD, anyhow this one maybe just as good as PowerDVD.

  7. I just tested it then to see and it plays Kwag's template fine which is a non compliant VCD so therefore it must be able to. No idea on it's limitations though such as bitrate limit etc.
