  1. Hi all:

I am new here so I apologize in advance if this has been asked already. I am trying to convert some movie files I got off of Kaaza. At the suggestion of this forum I started using tmpg.

The file is using the mpeg-4 video codec

My first attempt to convert the avi file, the tmpg was giving me an non-compatable error when I tried to open it. Again someone on this forum suggested the smr-patch. this fixed my problem

Now I ran the conversion fine. (it was real slow) however all I get is a black screen and no sound. (the source video runs fine).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  2. Start from the beging what exactly did you do after you downloaded the file (give good detail and we may be able to help you). Also did you follow the first guide under converting divx/avi with these tools:Virtualdub,TMPGenc, and Vcd easy (I use Nero Instead of vcd easy)They are all freeware.

  3. Thanks VCD

ok here is what I did

    1) downloaded the movie and tested it out on windows media player. It ran fine

    2) tried to convert it with roxio and of course it did not work. Read the guides here and decided on tmpg.

    3) downloaded tmpg and tried to convert. Got a non-compatable error when I tried to open the avi file. Checked the avi file against one that TMPG could open and noticed that the problem file was using a MPEG-4 Codec.

    4) did some more research and one of the forums suggested that I download the SMR-Patch. This worked.

    5) converted the using the TMPG guide provided under the capture HOW TO'S on this site (great guide). tried both VCD formats (pal and NTSC)

    6) tried to play the converted file in Windows media file and got a black screen and no audio for a file output.

    7) tried to do the same thing with a non mpeg-4 avi file and it worked fine.

    Further notes...
    1) in preview on TMPG the file is all black

    Thanks In advance.

  4. I have no idea if it might help, but I had the same problem and it turned out that the DivX codec (which I assume is the same as MPEG4) I had installed wasn't working properly. I could also see the movie in Win Media Player but in tmpgenc the preview and encoded file was black.

I reinstalled DivX-5 from www.divx.com and that did the trick.

    Hope it helps.

  5. Wow no wonder your frustrated all that work with no results.O.k take the original file (i hope you still have it).Use the first conversion divx/avi to vcd. The tools are Virtual dub, TMPGEnc, and vcd easy(I use nero instead of vcd easy). Newest versions of all programs. You never stated that you tried this method, no mention of virtual dub.I think you got the non-compatible error is because you didn't use virtual dub. The first time I tried to convert I got an error message also.I re-read the guide and down the bottom it says problems with tmpgenc click here.If you click it will then tell you to change the vfapi setting.I did this then it worked fine maybe you should try this guide. I must say when I download movies I do the two part ones, so it is less confusing you only have to do steps 1 & 2 under encoding(tmpgenc) then you just burn the mpeg file. However you have to do this to 2 files instead of 1 and split it.I also must mention that I only have used this one guide to do vcds not svcds and that most movies that I download are cam shots.Don't get frustrated I know you can do it , I just got a computer in oct 2001 and didn't know anything about them ither as a matter of fact I didn't even know what a zip file was until I had to download the programs in this guide(march). So what I'm saying is if a computer illeterate like me only using a computer for 6 months can do it you can to. Well let me know if I can help you further.also post your results her. Good luck Ed

  8. yea i remember I had the same problem a while back, But I don't remember the cause of it. But here's what I did to fix it. I open the movie with virtural dub, on video put it on full proccessing mode, and goto Compression and put it on Divx Low quality. Then I saved the avi and it worked on TMPG.

  13. AGUZ86, I really don't know what this smr patch is, but I've never down loaded it or had any problems converting a (smr)avi file, If you read the 1st guide(DIVX to VCD all in one) make sure you use the newest version of tmpgenc(2.53)like the guide says.down the bottom of the guide there is a section that says problems with tmpgenc click here, click on it and there it will tell you to change some priority. Even though UMMON didn't really explain it well that is actually what he did if you look at his last post he said he changed the priorities in tmpgenc. I have used this guide to convert more than a dozen movies this month.Actually it's really 24 times cause each movie I download has 2 parts.I did have problems like you because I didn't read that problem with tmpgenc part.AS soon as I realized my mistake I changed the priority thing and have no problems now. Try this and let me know if you are succesful. Oh yeah and once I changed it I just left it alone and never had to touch it again even for other files like (tmd ) or (km)files. GOOD LUCk VCD4ME
