A few years ago I bought a Compro T300 Analog/Digital TV card, basically to record programs I wanted to watch later. Recently I decided to convert some VCR tapes two of my sisters sent me, burn them to disks so they can be watched on any ordinary DVD player complete with chapter menus and return them to my sisters.
I plugged a Panasonic NV-HD620HD VCR into the card which is installed in a ten year old AMD Athlon mobo running on MS XP Pro via the composite plug and recorded away. Got both audio and video. So far, so good.
The format of the resulting file:I don't know what much of this means. First question: Would it be better to record in MPEG-4 format? According to the following list MPEG-4 is one of a boatload of other codecs available on my computer, and according to the brief Compro PDF manual it should show up among the options, but it does not. I wonder if I have missed a step during the installation of either the codecs or the TV card. Another question concerns the lines of noise at the bottom, and from this point on I find myself in unknown territory. I have read that I could use some program to crop the picture around all four edges, then resize, but I really prefer to mask the lines at the bottom only in black. Can I do that in some program that has a graphical user interface? You converted to MPEG-2 video and MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio. These are suitable for DVD-Video disc. However, if you intend to do any processing, such as masking the head-switch noise at the bottom of the frame, you should initially convert to a lossless video codec such as HuffYUV and uncompressed PCM audio. Then perform your editing/processing, and finally convert to the codecs which are required for DVD-Video. Otherwise, you are doing two lossy encodings and quality will suffer.
You can easily do capturing, editing and masking in VirtualDub. -
......and if you now decide you want MPEG-4, which is another lossy final delivery format not designed for editing, then obviously you don't want DVD and should change the title of this thread. MPEG4 can't be used for DVD. You've also managed to choose a low quality obsolete audio format by using Layer 2. Meanwhile I'm still trying to figure out how you reversed the usual PAL VHS field order from top field first to bottom field first. Not that the fields won't work that way, it's just the reverse from the way most of the VHS world turns.

Many of my PAL captures end up as Bottom Field First and look perfectly fine/normal. I cannot explain how they end up that way or which capture method/software was used at the time but I can say that the captures look perfectly fine and normal.Originally Posted by LMotlow
