We knew Microsoft was planning to block installation of Windows 7 and 8.1 updates on systems with Intel 7th Generation Core processors (more memorably known as Kaby Lake) and AMD Ryzen systems; we just weren't sure when. Now, the answer appears to be "this month." Users of new processors running old versions of Windows are reporting that their updates are being blocked. The block means that systems using these processors are no longer receiving security updates.
Awkwardly straddling the two policies are Intel's 6th Generation Core processors, aka Skylake. Some Skylake systems will continue to be supported in Windows 7 and 8.1. Others will not. Certain Skylake models shipped by 16 specific OEMs will continue to receive update support. But other Skylake systems will also need to upgrade to Windows 10 to receive ongoing updates.

Apple has it easy. They support what they want to until they don't, and tell any users who complain to get lost.

the microsoft crap smells of collusion to me. they couldn't give away the awful win10 and get people to install it so what did they do? did they pay off intel/amd to not produce win7, win 8 drivers for the new cpus so the consumers only choice is their invasive w10 crud?--

And another not ready to be released update. Those "updates" are flawed as they have blocked more than just 7th gen processors.

It looks like I won't be updating my CPUs anytime soon.
But I could also live without most 'security' updates from MS.... -
Wot's a security update ?
Have not installed a single Win7 update since the day this OS was installed. -

I've read conflicting reports about support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on a Skylake systems, so this article was helpful in that respect.
Windows 7 mainstream support ended before Skylake arrived, so I can somewhat understand why MS has decided not to support newer CPUs for Windows 7. ...but Windows 8.1 is still supposed to enjoy full support until early next year. I guess MS considers Windows 8.1 to be too unpopular to be worth bothering with anymore.
I've been updating my Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 sporadically or not at all since the Windows 10 forced upgrades ended. I worry that a faulty Microsoft update will screw them up.Ignore list: hello_hello, tried, TechLord, Snoopy329 -
When Microsoft introduced Windows 7 back in 2009, the software giant didn’t need to persuade customers to upgrade -- they leapt at the chance. Back then, upgrading to the latest and greatest version of Windows was a no brainer.
Fast forward to today, and Microsoft is in a very different position. Windows 10 is a huge improvement over its predecessor, Windows 8.x, and yet it’s struggling to gain market share. Figures from NetMarketShare, and Microsoft itself show adoption of the new OS has stalled. That’s got to be hugely frustrating for Microsoft, especially when you consider the number of tricks it has pulled to force users to upgrade.

it would work once. then all updates are blocked. you can uninstall the monthly roll-up the next month and do the manual ones again, but then after installing that months roll-up you will be missing all the previous months roll-ups. after a year you'd have one monthly roll-up and be missing 11 of them. at some point m.s. will probably just add the cpu check to all updates and even that minor loophole will be gone.

I guess you can always try to get the cumulative updates, instead of monthlies for now
MS is trying real hard to force people to change to win10 -
What are the last CPUs that are not blocked. Which CPUs can work on Win7 and Win8 without any issues?
