Hi!
I captured VHS video huffyuv codec and avi file format. I edited the video in this format and save it x264 mkv format my computer. What would be a good ABR bitrate for this? I do not move the videos to DVD discs, but I archive them on my hard disk so I think that the x264 and mkv is a good format.
Resolution is PAL 720 x 576.

Use crf instead bitrate - bitrate is important for cases where limitations of the transmission or storage bandwidth need to addressed.
Good (subjectively transparent) crf is around 16 - 18 - in case of poor quality recording (VHS) you may be interested in some video processing to improve quality and compressability.
