I know that you can only have selectable subtitles in SVCD. I am quite happy with the quality of standard VCDs I am getting, and the fact that I can fit over 80 minutes of video in one CDR.
Now, my questions are:
1. If encode video in MPEG2 format and use the bitrate of 1150Kbs (just like VCD), would i be able to use selectable subtitles if I burn as SVCD.
2. Is the quality the same if a video is encoded in MPEG1 and MPEG2 at the same bitrate.

technically, yes I think you would be able to use subtitles doing it that way. I believe it would make it a non-standard SVCD though, and I know my DVD player sputters and doesn't really play mpeg-2 under 1300kb/s or so. At 1150kb/s, the general opinion (and mine) is that the video quality looks better with mpeg-1 at lower bitrates. You could do it, and your player may or may not take it, but in any case, I don't think you would be happy with the results compared to a standard VCD.
