there are 2 place you might find better drivers:
www.rage3d.com
http://www.zardonthemystic.com/redsoftware/
i usually use those from rage3d but i've heard good things about the other too -
Is it worth installing that? I find my TV program crashes fairly often; I still hear the audio, and if I wait it restarts OK, but if I try to restart the program straight away it stops the audio and says failed to initialise, and I have to reboot then to get it working again.

My experience, sadly, is that ANY drivers not put out as the "official" ATI version are seriously bad news.
The last time I tried a set of "alternate" drivers from somewhere like Rage3d or Omega, it lost my capture hardware altogether, and told me I had a Radeon XXXX board I don't own (I have the AIW Radeon 32MB).
The last time a set did work, I noticed zero improvements, and two or three new problems.
Sadly, driver-wise, ATI is the best bet.
The capture drivers themselves probably aren't the main problem. You're probably blaming the sickness of the MMC programs on something driver-wise.
Never had luck with MMC.
