Where and how is the "posts since list visit" determined and
saved?
Is this info in a cookie on my local machine, or is it kept on a
server associated with this web site? And yes, I have myself
setup to automatically login.
The reason I am asking is that I am trying to figure out if I can
read new posts from multiple computers from one day to the next
and have it keep track. I was away for a few days and "caught up"
with the latest on my machine at home last night. Then when I came
in to work today, I expected to have to remember what I read from
my home machine last night, but the "view posts since last visit"
correctly showed me only the new stuff from last night to today.
This would imply that the web site itself is remembering what I
have read, not my local machine(s).
Also, if I "reload" the home page of dvdrhelp.com, this gives a
summary on the top right, including "# new forum posts". If
I reload this page a few times during the day without actually reading
any forum posts, and then towards the end of the day go into "forum"
and select "view posts since last visit", then It appears I am only
shown the new posts since the last time I "reloaded" the home page,
not since I really viewed the postings. Is this the way the "new forum
posts" mechanism is determined, or am I going crazy.
Finally, if I select "view posts since last visit" and then don't select
anything from the list for a few hours (got called away to a meeting
or something) when I attempt to use the list, the response is usually
"nothing meets search criteria" or something similar. Kind of like
a web search that has "expired". In this case, the mechanism to
determine what I have read seems to be "messed up" and I loose
the ability to figure out what I have "missed" during the day.
Thanks for any light you can shed on how this works so I can learn
to work within its boundaries.
