i posted this the other day, but with the board problems i had to re-register and my post was deleted.
anyway, i've been capturing video from y digital8 camera. i used premiere 6 and using the default ntsc standard 48khz template to capture. i end up with perfect 720x480 48khz 16bit dv avi files.
i've been trying to convert them to mpeg with tmpgenc. now i've tried about every setting i could think of, but for instance when i use the standard vcd template that comes with tmpgenc, i get perfect video, but distorted audio. the audio sounds very tinny, annoying, and distorted.
i had this problem in premiere using the ntsc standard 32khz template to capture the video, but switching it to 48khz seemed to fix it. so i'm guessing it's a problem with re-encoding the audio to mpeg-2 audio. i've tried messing with the settings, upping the bitrate to the max, upping the frequency to 48khz... but still no good. i've even tried using tooLAME.
any ideas, thoughts or suggestions?

i've added this so you can see what i'm talking about. follow the link and you'll see the dv/avi file capped straight from the camcorder, and an mpeg i made of it using tmpgenc ntsc vcd standard settings.
there are two examples.

i had a similar problem but found out recently that changing my capture card fixed the problem. i was capuring dv from a sony trv11 through a generic ti (texas instrument card) and getting bad audio mpeg 1 and mpeg 2.
i installed a $ 20 inland card and now the audio is normal.
wow what a relief -
I got the same problem but if you get a better solution please let me know. If I find out I'll let you know. I'm already using a Creative Sound Blaster Live audio card $79 so I don't think that the problem is my card.

the capture card i was refering to is a firewire capture card used for capturing digital video from my digital camcorder. the audio is also captured in the digital domain by the card thjrough the same connection also not by an analog audio card.
