Windows 10 Video Problems

I am hoping there 's a simple solution to this - I couldn't find it over several hours...

Recently upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) to Windows 10 -
but had to downgrade back to Window 7 because I could not solve this problem.

Problem: I immediately noticed playback issues of regular MP4 videos either directly from my camera or ones that I had processed using Windows Movie Maker 2012 (under Windows 7) - this was using the default Windows 10 player - Movies & TV app. However there was no such problems under Windows 10 using either Media Player Classic or even Windows Media Player.

Then when I tried to process a video using Movie Maker 2012 (under Windows 10) - I saw the same issue in the preview -
BUT the processed results had the same issues.

None of these problems existed under Windows 7

I tried clean uninstall and re-installing Windows Movie Maker 2012 - using the web install directly from Microsoft - that made no difference.

Thought perhaps Movie Maker was using the default player as its engine to render videos - so uninstalled the Movies & TV app - made no difference.

Made sure I had the latest codecs installed (K-Lite Mega pack - had been using this under Windows 7 for years without problems).

Because I really needed to process my videos - I downgraded back to Windows 7 - and then processed exactly the same video using exactly the same Movie Maker 2012 - no problems as can be seen in the second part of the video.

Really did not expect such a fundamental problem under Windows 10.

Any advice please on what to check/try, please?

It seems it isnt supported in win 10.
And K-lite codec isnt much popular here
You can try some free NLE software such as Shotcut, OpenShot, AviUtl, Blender etc.
Or you can try in properties change compatibility to other windows and run it as administrator.

I do not understand why Media Player Classic or even Windows Media Player can manage to play those same videos fine under Windows 10.

Have started programs as Administrator - made no difference.

I believe Windows Movie Maker is compatible with Windows 10 even though it is no longer supplied or supported in Windows 10 as Microsoft even link to download it.

Movie Maker is one of my core use programs and have checked that it was compatible with Win 10.

I had been a hold-out on upgrading to Win 10 because I wanted to be careful to avoid problems - so it came as a shock that Win 10 default player Movies & TV app does not even play MP4s properly -
I was hoping to find what I may have missed.

Uninstall K-lite codec. I just try my video without any codecs packs and preview looks absolutelly o.k.
Try reinstall movie maker from there as you did before http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/movie-maker
Then search for windows update.

And yes everything exported without problem.

When I re-install Windows 10
I'll uninstall K-Lite and Movie Maker
- re-install Movie Maker from scratch -
and see what happens.

Although also have to check if without any codecs all the players I use (default Movies & TV app, Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player) will still play MKV files, as most of my library is now mkv.

When I do re-upgrade to Windows 10, I'll definitely return and let you know.

However in the meantime -

Although it is a completely different PC - I have a laptop with a painfully slow processor
which I upgraded to Windows 10 (from 8.1) about a month ago -
I just re-tested it with those problematic video files.

Windows 10 default player Movies & TV played the original camera MP4 (high bitrate) fine,
as well as the MP4 produced with Windows Movie Maker 2012 (under Windows 7 from my desktop PC).

On that laptop using Movie Maker 2012 the preview of the original camera MP4 was also fine.

I also checked a few small MKV files, and they played fine with Movies & TV, Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic Home Cinema edition.

I had to download Media Player Classic - that would play the high bitrate original camera MP4 - BUT it was in sort of slow motion - where the audio sounded fine but the video was slowed down - but that is kind of acceptable - I had only been using Media Player Classic as a light weight player and for checking "compatibility" - and I hadn't even installed it since upgrading to Windows 10 on this laptop.

K-Lite had not been installed on that laptop.

So I think you may well be right - K-Lite may be the culprit causing some problems.

I re-upgraded to Windows 10 -
but before that since it's suspected K-Lite may have caused problems -
I uninstalled it as cleanly as possible using IObit Uninstall with powerful scan to cleanup registry and leftovers.

After installation of Windows 10 -
default player Movies & TV played the MP4 files fine.....

So I tried Windows Movie Maker 2012 -
but that still seemed to give the same preview problems.

So I uninstalled it using Windows control panel (standard and recognizable by Windows)
BUT when I went to re-install it Windows Essential 2012 installer indicated Movie Maker was still installed and therefore did not offer to install it....

I had come across this before had to resort to manual cleaning/deletion
then run wlarp.exe /cleanup:all /q
which is supposed to cleanup all traces of Windows Essential/Live from my PC -

BUT wlarp did not do it this time - the install still insisted Movie Maker was installed.

Cut long story short - I spent hours researching about Windows Live file locations and registry entries, and cleaned those up too...
but install still did not cooperate.

After I exhausted my options - I decided I would downgrade back to Windows 7 and try another day.

BUT guess what? Windows Movie Maker was no longer there when I got back to Windows 7!!!
So under Windows 7 I attempted to use the installer - no good still thinks it's installed!

So I did all the cleanup all over again step-by-step -
and used wlarp.exe /cleanup:all /q
but no, install still thinks Movie Maker is installed!

So now I am on Windows 7 again and no Movie Maker -

as a last resort - I restored the (safety) System Backup from just before I first upgraded to Windows 10...
and Phew! Movie Maker is now back and I confirmed it was working fine....

So I have to decide if it is worth my while to upgrade to Windows 10 as I may run the risk of not being able to install a working version of Movie Maker.....

Thanks for the effort to help me, I do appreciate it - and K-Lite probably was the culprit, since Movies & TV seem to work properly under Win 10 (after I had uninstalled K-Lite under Win 7) - but not Movie Maker - I can't seem to find a reliable way to uninstall it, so that the installer would recognize it's gone..... wlarp which worked before for some reason didn't seem to clean up the mess.

There might be some hope since I am back on a restored Win 7 from 5 days ago (before any of this) - upgrading from that base might not have the uninstall problem....

Right now though, having spent several and I do mean several hours of concentrated/intense effort in trying to uninstall then re-install Movie Maker in Windows 10 - to no avail - then discovering when I reverted back to Windows 7, Movie Maker was no longer there (note: I was very, very careful not to touch anything in the Windows.old folder even if it referenced Movie Maker or Windows Live)
I am kind of reluctant to try again for a while ...

check in control panels, if you have there Windows esential 2012. If windows still things that there are MM still present it could be in standart uninstalation (control panels)

Yes, that's how I first uninstalled Movie Maker in Windows 10 - by using the control panel - the entry was Windows Essential 2012 (there was no separate entry for Movie Maker), because I thought the control panel uninstall was standard and ought to be recognized by Windows, instead of any other purportedly more comprehensive uninstallers like IObit Uninstaller, REVO uninstaller or cCleaner.

All the problems stem from the uninstall using Control Panel not being recognized by the web (or offline) Windows Essentials 2012 installer.

I think I may take a few days rest, and maybe try again from this cleaner/restored base.

The Movies & TV application only uses Media Foundation codecs. K-Lite, which uses DirectShow codecs, does not have any effect on it.

There is an alternative to the Windows Live Movie Maker (which has a terribly buggy installer):

I now wonder what caused that strange effect in both Movie & TV app and Movie Maker 2012 (the first time I upgraded to Win 10) -
and what made it go away when I re-upgraded in Movies & TV - but remain with Movie Maker 2012?
This inconsistency may cast some doubt on Win 10....

Which GPU and driver do you have? It looks like a decoding problem related to reference frames. Windows 10 installs and updates drivers automatically. You can disable that with ShutUp10. Then manually install different version of the driver.

Also try disabling hardware acceleration:
Codec Tweak Tool > Various Tweaks > DXVA for Microsoft DTV-DVD video decoder

The Radeon HD 4200 does not officially support Windows 10. This means that there won't be any updates, and that the current drivers that are used by Windows 10 use an older driver model (WDDM 1.2) from Windows 8.0.

I would personally recommend staying with Windows 7. That will be getting security updates until 2020. You will probably have upgraded your current hardware before that date.

Staying with Win 7 are my current thoughts too -
mainly because Win 7 is working (very) well (for me)
and I have yet to find anything that I can't do
(maybe making toast? )

I still have over a month and a half before I have to finalize any decisions,
but the current status after trying the upgrade twice -
is Win 10 causes me some very fundamental problems on my current hardware,
that do not exist under Win 7.

If you find that you must you must use a newer OS on that machine at some point, I had no OS-related problems from running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center on my HTPC, which also has Radeon HD 4200 graphics.

And since you have already updated to Win10 once, your machine should be permanently activated. So there is no hurry at all if you ever want to try Win10 again in the future. But keep in mind that a clean install of Win10 gives much less troubles than upgrade installs. If you search the Internet you will find lots of strange problems with upgrades that disappeared after doing a clean install of Win10.

There might be a slight wrinkle -
my current Win 7 was from a restored backup (before any upgrade attempt)
My earlier (second) "rollback" downgrade (from Windows.old) had Movie Maker missing (please see Post #8 above), so I restored Win 7 from my backup before the (1st) upgrade.

I have years of pretty substantial investment on my desktop PC -
so if asked the question the other way -
if offered Win 10 Free - but only as a clean install for this PC -
I probably would not take it.
