  1. Hello,

I have a dashcam that records .265 hvec files.

I have some I've copies onto my desktop in hopes of cutting the footage to smaller clips ..any truly free programs that can do this?

    Just looking for cutting clips.

    Thank you.

  3. One of the first two. They are both a little quirky in how they work. Not very obvious. You will have to play a little.

Chas, what version of VDub are you suggesting? I can't "stream copy" export HEVC from the stock VDub 2. The file opens OK, but will be re-encoded if I trim and then export.

Definitely AVIDemux. Lossless cutting into HEVC/MP4. The portable version works well.

For the floor, can AVIDemux cut and join multiple segments from the one file? In other words, can you mark two or more ranges? I can't see how to do that.

I'd output the edited video as h264 from virtualdub(I believe the latest versions have this built in?). H265 is useless to me.

I'm sure H265 will be OK for the OP. After all, they can obviously view it already. H264 would just result in less quality or larger file sizes, would it not?

I "downgrade" to H264 because my Blu Ray player doesn't DO H265. My brother sent me H265 files that neither one of us could play on our TVs....I taught him Handbrake and now he goes Camera to Handbrake to TV.....he's a happy camper.
Without a computer to tell you if a file is H264 or H265.....I doubt anyone could tell the difference.

If the dashcam video will be given to someone else and there is no requirement that it must be provided unchanged, then I agree that then exporting the edited video as H264 is a better choice. Support for H.265 playback isn't as widespread yet.

Fair enough on the 264/265 comments. I still think AVIDemux is a better/easier option than VDub.

I used to LOVE AviDemux when I was doing a lot of MPEG2 stuff......especially when upgrading audio to CD/Wave audio in music videos. Video remained untouched while changing/syncing new audio.

+1 for Avidemux. Importantly, it's well documented.
