  2. I'd have to vote for the Pioneer A04 DVD-R/W drive. For software, go with either SpruceUp (if you can find it), Ulead Movie Factory, or if cost is not a factor, ReelDVD.

  3. Are you wanting to convert to VCD rather than copy DVDs to another DVD format?

If thats the case then you will need a DVDrom drive and a CD writer. DVD rom drives (read only, cannot be used to write to DVDs) can be bought for around 50 UKpounds so they'll be cheaper in the US. CDwriters can be bought for around the same amount for cheaper brands and around 100-150 for the new ultra fast ones. Any standard CD writer can created video CDs with appropriate software.

You'll find all the software and help you need to rip DVDs and burn to VCD here on this website.

If you're on about DVD burning then thats a different issue and much more expensive. For compatibility and low price of media then it has to be DVD-R but the writers are slower than DVD-RAM and DVD+R/RW.

For speed DVD-RAM is best but you can't play the discs on any current model home DVD players except a couple made by Toshiba and Panasonic and the blanks are very expensive.

DVD+R/RW is faster than DVD-R/RW but media is more expensive especially DVD+R media.

DVD-R works in about 90 % of current DVD players, DVD-RW and DVD+RW are less compatible, and DVD+R is at the moment pretty much unproven because it's just been released.
