Awkward Jumps with Audio Normalization

Hi all,

I tried posting this in "Editing" first, but couldn't find much luck with my problem.

In this interview I'm editing, I'd like to normalize the volume. But the problem is that there's sudden spikes in the original clip that skew automatic normalization resulting in this awkward sound jump between clips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI6ZJ5JHtXU (this is "normalize all peaks" to -6)

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to solve this while still getting the volume adjustment I need?

Have you tried a two pass normalisation using EAC3To?
