    hi

I have an .avi which has (I think) large Malaysian subtitles at the bottom. Is there any way of getting rid of these before or during the process of conversion to .mpg? thx

Sort of, but it's not going to be pretty. You can use one of the 3rd-party delogo filters for virtualdub when you frameserve to tmpgenc (find the delogo filters via the links at www.virtualdub.org), but the area where the subs were will be pretty distorted.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. since your file is an .avi, the subtitles are part of the actual movie. They are not some seperate subtitle track that can be turned on or off like on a DVD. Removing the subtitles would be about as easy as removing an actor from a scene. Anything that would take them out would ruin the picture behind them and make your movie look just as annoying as it does with subtitles. Maybe you could crop it to 16x9 and then the black bands would cover the subtitles.

  4. The way i would think about doing it is just crop the picture till the subtitles arent in it anymore. You will however lose a fair bit of picture. Subtitles suck in general. In my opinion if you want to watch an english movie, then go and learn english.
