I was supposed to upgrade back in december, but that project got held off because of a financial emergency, but now i got some money set aside, i'll like it if i could get advice on this build.
CPU : Core i7 5820K 6-core 3.3ghz
Cooler : Noctua NH-D15
MB : Asus X99-A
RAM : Crucial 4x8 GB DDR4 2133 mhz CL15
HDs : Already own a SSD and a few others
GPU : Asus GeForce GTX970 STRIX
PS : EVGA Supernova G2 750 watts
Case : Cooler Master HAF 932 (already owned)
I intend to overclock the processor to around 4ghz, am i well set to achieve this with this setup ?
I use After Effects the most, but end up using premiere a lot too for my job. i'm really digging 3D and will probably use it more and more, I guess my priority would be good render times and a smooth experience in softwares.
Thank you !

For the price of that Noctua NH-D15 air cooler, you could use a liquid CPU cooler and be much quieter and much more efficient, especially if you plan on over clocking. The older Corsair H-50s I use are still going strong two years later and are completely silent. If you are using a modern motherboard, you can use the CPU fan output set to PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and even the cooling fans will be quiet. And they can quickly speed up when needed. The CPU in my computer details maxes out at about 40C under load and it also runs at 4.2Ghz at 100% on all eight cores.

I researched the matter thoroughly on many forums and most of what i found was that the NH-D15 outperforms any similarly priced water cooler out there.

I am putting a similar X99 setup together this week:
CPU: 5820K
Cooler: Corsair H100
MB: MSI X99S XPower E-ATX
RAM: Don't know yet wait till last moment, prices coming down every day.
GPU: MSI GTX 970 4GD5T OC
PS: Seasonic SS-1250XM X-Series
CASE: Fractal Design Arc XL Case
My only concern with your build is about this one:
Crucial 4x8 GB DDR4 2133 mhz CL15
2133 is pretty slow for DDR4.
I like a minimum of 32BG myself but I am going to load my X99 with 4x4GB to start, later when prices come down you can pick up 3Ghz modules for a steal. Same with the CPU, 5820K is a sweet deal, but hopefully we get 10 or 12 non-xeon cores coming on this platform eventually.
Are you thinking of getting an M.2 PCIe 4x Samsung SSD boot drive?
Looks like a killer! You can order them from Australia.

Actually, there is almost no real world advantage to getting higher bandwidth RAM at this point unless for rare and specific applications, I read a lot on the subject and as the RAM bandwidth increases so does the latency and they almost cancel out, so don't waste your money on supposedly faster RAM because it isn't really, you get maybe 1-3% more speed for about 15-25% more dollars !
This video sums it up pretty well : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWgzA2C61z4 -
That should be doable, but every individual chip is different. I would be happy with 3.8 already.
For video rendering I would not recommend maxing out anyways because of the agony of getting a blue screen with some smiley after a few hours of rendering reaching 98% complete.......
Prime95 is the ultimate torture test for your computer. Make sure the CPU does not throttle because then you are already overclocking too much. Also prime95 gets extremely hot due to the fact that it uses some new instructions that can pull more adaptive voltage. So some people do not like prime95 for Haswell. However since some encoders use them you should test at least some time.
I tend to overclock to where I can run prime 95 stable for awhile and then lower the clock speed at least two hunderd Mhz.
So if I get 4.1 I leave it at 3.9.

thank you, i've never overclocked in my life so this is all very exotic to me, but i'll start reading on it

Decided on the memory, got the Viper Xtreme Edition, DDR4 32GB (4 x 8GB) 2800MHz Low Latency Quad Kit.
Tomorrow and Friday I will be working on updating (got to rearrange four computers), so I may not do many postings, which apparently seems to some a great relief.

What did you finally pick up? Also, if you did get the GTX 970 could you do some encoding tests for speed and quality with NVENC HEVC using the plug in for Premiere Pro, Media Coder, Hybrid and Staxrip.
I'm not really asking too much, am I? -
Just wrapped up the OC setting on my new computer.
Decided to stop at 4.2Ghz for the 5820K and 2800 MHz for the memory. Overclocking X99 is interesting in that both BLK and the multiplier can to be used.
It always depends on the chip but it seems 4.0 on the 5820K is very easily doable.
Got that NVENC stuff to work following these instructions:

No time today for any testing.

Not quite wrapped up....
4.3 is the limit I get when running the BLK above 100 in order to get 2800 on the memory. However running the rig on 2400 standard DDR4 with a BLK of 100 I can get 4.5. Running the VCORE all the way up to 1.305 but thermally it stays under 70C even at 100% cpu utilization. Given the temp it looks like there might be 4.6-4.7 to press out of if I tinker with other options.
But 4.5. is pretty good, I am happy!
