I have just been given a high quality professional Video deck (Sony SVP-5600p) with what I would imagine was a top notch Time Base Corrector / ProcAmp.

I was looking at getting an inline TBC/ProcAmp before I got this machine but now I am not sure if it will be a waste of time.

Can you cause problems if you play a video through two separate TBC’s then to the computer? I would be using a Edirol VMC-1 or Canopus ADVC-300 as a capture device.

The first TBC in the path will perform the timebase correction.
The second TBC will just "see" a stable signal. Unless it provides some noticeable benefit, I would recommend that it be removed from the path just in order to avoid any additional signal degradation from its internal A/D D/A conversions, sampling, filtering, etc.

That’s pretty much what I thought. But that leaves me with another dilemma?

I could turn them both on or off but which TBC would be better? The one on the professional deck that is about 15 years old or the “not-so-pro” but modern one that exists on the VMC-1?

That may vary from tape to tape. On problematic tapes, one TBC might be able to fix a problem that the other one can't. On good tapes, there may be no difference. You'll have to experiment. Just remember to bypass the internal TBC if you want to test the timebase correction performance of the external one.

  5. Hello..

I hang on this thread to ask for help. Bought this unit at a very good price, but seller says "from one day to another, picture from unit only comes out in black and white....Mechanism works fine". He changed cables, and sotware, but problem still appears, even when visiting a technician.

Can anyone help me? Or is an expensive failure?
    Thabkis,
