You should first read what is DV and then ask. It is useless to answer to you if you do not know even basic facts...

  3. FM,

Ya ever think that people post questions here in order to learn/understand some of what you call *BASIC* facts. Thanks for the useless reply. What I ment by DV is: Capturing an AVI from my SONY MINI DV DCR-PC100 Camcorder via FireWire to my PC under Win2K.

  4. It was a rather obtuse response, wasn't it? Maybe he thought there's a "What is DV?" in the FAQ. There doesn't appear to be one on this topic.

I'm pretty sure you can't capture DV with the Huffyuv codec because Huffyuv expects input in simple uncompressed formats like RGB and YUV (YUY2 and UYVY). You could convert to Huffyuv or another codec as an additional step after capturing in native DV, but that might satisfy your needs.

Indeed, I don't know of any codecs capable of converting DV during a capture.

  5. I don't think you can. you could probably convert it after the capture, but then why would you want to? Its best to keep it as is, edit it, and then compress to what ever you want the end format to be.

So you have a sony pc100, how is it? I have been going back and forth trying to decided on the pc110 and pc9. any suggestions or comments? The pc110 is bascially a pc100 with a little extra, the same can be said for the pc9 and pc5)

  6. Thanks guys,

I tried to capture with Vdub and it only lets me capture via DirectShow. Life goes on. I love the PC100, it is a fabulous camcorder. It takes a little getting use to because its shape is quit different than standard camcorders. You will be using your right index finger to control the zoom, this will take some getting use to, but when you get the hang of it you will be fine. I would go for it.

    Regards,

    Marc

Hey, guys... When you come to a new job you are expected to know at least some basics or you will never get this job, right? The same here and with video capture. Unless you know what are you doing you will never get good results. Read about DV first. Then - welcome to the forum to ask questions.

  8. VirtualDub doesn't capture DV video, if i'm not mistaken, it says so on the website...

    Q:VirtualDub says I don't have a capture device, but I know I have one.

A:VirtualDub needs a Video for Windows capture driver to capture. Most Firewire (DV) devices do not provide a VFW driver, and thus cannot be used by VirtualDub at all. Also, ATI appears to be shipping their current devices with a WDM (Windows Driver Model) driver only; this can be used indirectly by VirtualDub through a Microsoft wrapper, but it is crippled in functionality and it also appears that the wrapper is buggy.

The wrapper will show up as "Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)." If it works for you, great.

Q:I can capture DV through VirtualDub, but I get the audio out of my sound card instead.

A:Video for Windows only captures audio through a sound device; with DV, the audio is interleaved with the video itself. I don't have any DV specs, so I can't make VirtualDub extract the audio.

  9. I was able to capture an AVI using VDub. It took a long time to come up and realize that my camcorder was connected. I would not recommend using it, there are much better to capture DV such as Pure Motion. I was capturing via firewire woth my Sony DCR-PC100.

FM - Yet another useless post in this topic. Feel free to go visit another topic if you have nothing to add here. I am trying to learn just like others, this is far from a job. I asked a question that I was unable to locate ananswer to and was looking to someone willing to share their knowledge. Sorry you are not that person. Once again, THANKS to those who have gvien me something to note and add to my knowledge base.

    Regards,

    BT

  10. Dear Friends

FYI, I have the Panasonic DS-28 DV and I use MovieDVSuite to capture the avi. Works great since I can control the Panasonic camcorder with the software.

I use TMPGE to "down-code" into SVCD.

    Cheers

    Pat
