OK, I've ripped my m2v file off the DVD and my goal is to make a VCD from it. To avoid the audio synch problem, should I encode the video at 29.97 since I know that this was not shot on film, but rather on video? Or do I stick with the 24 frame rate no matter what the source material is?

BTW, we're talking all NTSC stuff here.

    thanks...

  2. well...first off, which frameserver are u using? dvd2avi?

second, 24 fps is not correct, the actual fps is 23.976...in fact, one of the versions of dvd2avi gave audio sync probs cuz it was 24 fps rather than 23.976

i'm guessing you're gonna use a frameserver like dvd2avi to frameserve to tmgpenc, don't think u can stick the actual vobs into tmpgenc directly. anywayz, dvd2avi will tell you which framerate to use, if it's FILM, progressive you should enable force film which is 23.976 fps...but if it's NTSC, interlaced, you should disable forced film which is 29.97 fps. you can find out about all this by loading the vobs to dvd2avi and then previewing it (f5)

Thanks for the response. I'm actually doing this under OSX (I know there's a Mac forum, but I figured that this is a more a question based on working with video than working with a particular platform).

Jeez, my original posting wasn't all that clear now that I read it again.

What I was really looking for the answer for was if I decode the video from a DVD for the purpose of matching it up with audio decoded from the ac3 file, will it matter if I use 29.79FPS vs 23.976FPS. I know that the DVD's video was shot on DV, and not on film (but I've since read that even DVD's mastered from film are encoded at 29.79fps... right?).

Last time I tried this the audio was all out of sync, and I was wondering if it was a mistake I made on the original decode.

  4. wbaccus, if u encode it at 23.976 fps, you're suppose to add the 3:2 pulldown flags so that when your rip is being played back, it will be played at 29.97 fps

are u using dvd2avi? if you r, u can find out the video type (FILM or NTSC)....

depending on the vid type, u should either encode it 23.976 w/ 3:2 pulldown (FILM) or 29.97, interlaced, w/o 3:2 pulldown (NTSC)

if u do use dvd2avi, can u post which video type it is?
