how do I cut out a part of mkv?

I have a mkv file with FLAC track, and another mkv with AAC track. I need to cut these down to a tiny size to act as samples for people to test. How do I do this without destroying or changing the format of the audio?

To do that in that mkvmerge that was recomended. You need 30 sec for example, easy way is to remux it in mkvmerge again, set split after duration, like 00:00:30 and then mux again. You can abort process after some good sample from beginning was already generated.
