  1. Hi all

    I have a question:
    Is it possible to remux/convert a DVD-Video (vob-file) to a Apple-TV compatible container Fomat like *.mp4?

There are several Tools to convert it to mp4 with Re-Encoding, but it has a quality-loss...
So I'm searching for a way to change the Container without Re-Encoding!
    Is this possible?

Can someone help me and explain how to do this?

    best regards
    Christian
PS: My English isn't very good, hope you can understand what I want to say

Is that because the AppleTV doesn't support MP2 and/or AC3? You can certainly mux them into an MP4 container.

  4. It doesn't support MPEG2 video (reportedly there are some hacks that might be able to get it to work), but certainly not MPEG2 in MP4 container

  6. I guess Apple is to "cool" and "hip" to support legacy formats

They want you to buy the release from their store, not rip your own dvd to play

  7. there is a program that can convert a dvd to mp4. it's called vidcoder. takes like 15 minutes to do and you can do mp4 with aac, ac3, dts. i know apple tv supports mp4 with ac3. but if you want the most versatile player get wdtv live. hope this helps.

  9. 1st gen ones didn't even support full hd (720p only). Current 3rd gen ones don't even support High@L4.1 AVC (basically that rules out be able to remux every major blu -ray in existence , since MPEG2 isn't supported, and VC-1 (from microsoft) isn't supported, and the majority of BD's are AVC High@L4.1)

Even asus oplay mini for about $50 plays dozens of more formats ... But hey it's an Apple product so it has to be great

  11. To be fair, not all their products are overpriced lemons . Some of them are just overpriced, but actually perform ok

But they've got some of the best marketing on the planet. I don't know how else to explain the rampant brainwashing and lack of rational decision making purchases

Yes, they've managed to turn their products into fashion accessories. You have to be seen with them and you have get a new one each season.

I had to buy a mac for ios developing and now I have a macbook pro, iphone, ipad and an apple tv....

The appletv is pretty useless as dvd/file media player. But as a live sport streaming player it's good. I can use it when I visit friends to watch my own sport channels on tv.

  15. MPEG2 is a different video standard then MPEG4. MPEG4 container was designed around MPEG4 codec (compression) and H264 codec. MPEG2 is a completely different compression algorithm and the format for the containers designed to hold MPEG2 video data is completely different than the containers designed to hold MPEG4 (or H264) compressed video data. What you are trying to do (put MPEG2 compressed video in an MPEG4 container) is quite impossible. However a "hold anything you want" container format DOES EXIST. It is called MKV.

It's not impossible. I've done it. See the attached file.

Except the Apple TV doesn't play any MKV file.
