I recently purchased this unit at Walmart to work alongside and eventually replace my Philips DVP5982/37. I wanted to keep playback of DiVX/XViD AVI's and add playback of AVC MKV's. I have collected a ton of AVI's over the years and didn't want to replace them.

After a few days with this new BDP2985/F7 unit I'm very happy. One drawback of the older DVP5982/37 was the slow USB 1.1 speed. This seems to have been fixed with full USB 2.0 (no not USB 3.0) speed on the new BDP2985/F7. The player is DivX PlusHD certified so it does play all my old DiVX AVI's over USB external drive and all the AVI's I burned to DVD.

So far I am very happy with playback of H.264 video in MKV and MP4 file containers. I am not as familiar with these file formats and containers. But so far test files I have thrown at it labeled something like BRRIP BDRIP HDTV x264 play great.

YouTube and Netflix playback work fine. Although the Wi-fi worked OK, I found it easier and more reliable streaming using a LAN cable from my router.

I tried to add the Philips BDP2985/F7 to the database and appears I was successful as I got the message that it would be added in a few days. Hopefully starting this thread will also add some search capability for other potential buyers.

Found a URL for the supported file formats for this player dated 2012-11-16
    http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/get?url=/sca/sca/121116/121116044231_100146.pdf&ofn="C19_AV_FILE_FORMAT_20 12models.pdf"

I have updated firmware via USB port to version 2.54 dated 2012-10-23.

    Cheers!

I'm (still) happy with the Philips BDP2985. One additional note discovered after time. The player supports Cinavia.

A backup of the Colombiana Blu-ray, when burned to a DVD+R or Blu-ray disc then played, results in the Cinavia Message Code 3 warning.

The same backup files, played over the BDP2985's USB 2.0 port connected to an external hard drive, play flawlessly. The external HDD is formatted NTFS to accommodate the large files produced by a Blu-ray backup.
