I have 4 physical hard drives and my C drive is only 80GB's. I keep all data files on the other hard drives. 80Gb's seems adequate for this setup with only the OS(XP) and programs on it. Am I correct or should I use a larger C drive?

I would use the fastest hdd for windows and programs.
I use a 74gb SSD for my c drive and it works pretty good. But then I don't have any huge programs like office, etc. I have around 5-15 GB free. -
It's OK, because XP itself is not a disk hog
like Windows 8, 7 or Vista
For the notes, the C drive of my XP machine actually is the first and smallest (12.5 GB) partition of a 40GB HDD. Most (not all) installed programs "live" on the second partition, and the random documents / pics / videos / whatever always go to the larger and faster disks. -
A small boot HDD with XP shouldn't be a problem. Just try to direct your programs from putting too much extra data on it and filling it up.
With mechanical drives, I like to keep at least 25% free space. With SSD drives, I like about 50% so the data can be moved around a bit to prevent over use or early burnout of RAM cells.
Newer OS's like W7 seem to use up a bit more HDD space. And some software programs dump all their temp and storage files onto the boot drive by default. With SSD drives, I've been happy with 120GB boot drives. I had a 60GB SSD and it took constant monitoring to keep it from getting filled up and slowing down. I have a couple of PCs with 150GB Raptor 10K RPM boot drives and those seem to also work well.
About the only time I would use a large (500GB or larger) boot drive is if it was the only HDD on the PC. -
For my "new" computer that I just got I picked up a 1tb sata seagate drive. But I partitioned it to 80gb and the rest for storage, plus I have a separate 500gb sata I moved from my other computer.
So far I like the setup. Of course its 78.9 formatted capacity partially because I didn't know what the actual bytes was for 80gb in the partition setup during the windows setup. (right now I'm about 40gb free but I don't have any special programs like office on it, only norton 360 and a bunch of video programs from here on videohelp)
It works well for win8.
Of course you have to remember to point any programs to make their output directory onto your extra drives or you'll fill up fast.
I still have to go in and change my temp folder in ripbot, it defaults to the c drive which isn't good.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Yoda 313 - I have all my programs save to my D drive. I use my E and F drives for video work. I just checked and I have 38GB free on my C drive.

Just go to Windows advanced settings, click the Environment Variables button and change the TEMP and TMP folders to the root of the 500 GB drive (should be D) do the same for the Windows variables (that's the second box).
While you're there, click the Performance button - Virtual Memory tab and set the swap file to the 500 GB drive, remove the swap file from the C: drive.
That will solve having to reset most programs temp folder and will boost bootup speed and any swap file access by programs. -

And I think I'll leave swap file alone. I like my boot time as it is - just about 1min or so. LIghtyears faster then my vista dual core.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -

I partitioned it have the os on the 80gb part.
I did a rough count while booting up the other night and I was at just about a minute from power on to the windows 8 tile screen (whatever metro is called these days). I am absolutely satisfied with that startup timeDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
