I have a computer which uses DDR3 PC32000 memory. At present it has only 384mb of memory. I want to increase to the maximum which appears to be 3.5gb.
I have the chance to buy some DDR1 cheaply. Would this still work in my machine?
Cheers
Bill

No. The ddr1 chips won't even fit into the slots for ddr3 short of using a large hammer. (don't do this)
-
By the way, are you certain that your current computer is using ddr3? I don't think they make ddr3 that small (in capacity). And DDR1 400mhz is designated PC3200.
-
Cheers for that. Reading the motherboard page on Asus website, it says the motherboard uses DDR3. There is no mention of DDR on the chips themselves. How would I find out what theya ctually are?
-
DDR1 and DDR2 both had a flavor of PC3200. Physically they can be identified by removing the sticks and counting the
contact pins along the bottom. DDR 1 has 92 per side, while DDR 2 has 120.
Installed, perhaps something like CPU-Z will differentiate. -
Are you certain you have the correct designation for this motherboard? How old is the computer? DDR1 ram hasn't been used for new ones in many years. I'm not certain of dates, but the last one I built with DDR1 was back in 2005 or so.
Take a look at the diagram showing the different slots on the memory chips on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_memory
The memory chip will have writing on it somewhere showing its type and speed. Even the generic chips have this. -
When in doubt, use a site such as Crucial.com. Enter your hardware specs and see what is recommended. They guarantee anything that they recommend (assuming you enter the correct information). If nothing else, you will see the RAM type and specs needed.
There should also be an approved RAM list on the Asus website.Google is your Friend
