For complex reasons, I would like to transfer a commercial, copy-protected DVD to VHS tape. I can only find information about doing this the other way around (VHS to DVD). Any suggestions as to what I can do to accomplish this?

You could do it if you have S-Video or composite out on your videocard but you first have to rip the DVD to your PC. Why not search ebay or Amazon for the VHS?
