    Hi all

I have an mp4 format video file that I downloaded that I'd like to be able to edit, just some minor cropping of the length file and size of the frame etc.

The file as it is plays absolutely ok in VLC player, getting the media info tells me it has the following codecs :
    Video: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
    Audio: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)

I've tried loading the file into VirtualDub Experemental version 1.10.3 x86, I have the DShowInputDriver.vdplugin in the plugins32 directory so I can open the mp4 file directly and perform the edits as needed, saving to a destination AVI with video set to full processing and audio to direct stream copy.

This produces an output AVI that plays in VLC but has no sound and I get the message "No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this." I presume the problem is with the audio as the video is fine.

If I try to do full processing of the Audio in VirtualDub, I get the error : "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format (source format tag: fffe)".

Is there a way that I can edit this with VirtualDub, or a similar program that I can use to perform the edits or translate the file into a format that VirtualDub can handle ?

If it matters I'm running Windows 7 X64, I have ffdshow and various codec packs installed.

    Cheers.

    Phill.

Try install an aac decoder like the AAC ACM Codec.

Or you can always try Avidemux. It can cut and also resize.

Be aware that there are different versions of the FFDshow plugin and they all do NOT work with various problems in each. Some do not even show the file information when you click that choice. Below is the ones I keep in my plugins32 folder and the one shown being used fails on some AAC audio exactly as you mention. The one that says NEW works with the AAC when it fails on the other. I just change the extension and swap them out. The one that says fails does just that, fails in a LOT of areas.

And yes you will get this error also using the wrong one:

A work around that sometimes works with the correct FFdshow that still gives errors is to select Audio-> audio from other file and then just select the original video. This works most times if you do not care if you get the original codec for audio.

Be aware also that some plugins bring the video and audio in as uncompressed and raw and VirtualDub may have problems playing these if it is not set up correctly with VFW codecs to handle them.

Best way is the above techniques as well as trying the FFInputfilter being aware it will bring most videos in as uncompressed audio and video with the problems mentioned above and will need both recompressed.

Just an added note if you are looking to use VirtualDub to directly create an MP4... I have a vdprof set up for import that allows the 1.10.3 version to use as an external encoder in AVC/AAC format. You just need to place the NeroAAC and FFmpeg in the "C:\Standalone\VirtualDub1103\Tools\" directory or edit the path in the encoders.

If anyone is interested I can send the links:

OOOps... Actually you need these External encoders, MP4box, NeroAAC, FFmpeg and x264. The others below come with these 4.
