You can only run windows 98 on a maximum of 512 mb of ram,it will glitch out if you try to start up with too much ram, only have 512 mb installed.

Also just set your computer to boot with a cd and you will get a win98 boot screen to install,if you don't then you have an illegal copy of windows 98.

Not all Win98 CDs were bootable. I have a retail Win98 upgrade CD -- it's not bootable.

Win98 has a 2gb ram limit but has a bug with having more than 512mb,your vm machine has a fix for it most likely,a win98 disc will say right on it if its an upgrade version which was never mentioned.

    type 'CD\WIN98', then press 'ENTER'
    type 'setup', then press 'ENTER'

I used to have the Windows 98 upgrade CD, and I had just sold it on Ebay because it's 1st edition & not bootable.

You need to install from a floppy drive if the CD is not bootable. Floppy needs system files so you change drive to the letter your your CD is. Seach for boot disk, there should be sites with files you copy but your going to need a floppy drive.

You don't need a floppy drive, you can download a boot image of win98 to burn to a cd but the thing is if this a win98 update disc then your going to need a previous windows to verify that you can install it.
