  1. I used the DownHelper plugin for Firefox to get a YouTube clip into an mp4, but then when I play it in Windows Media Player (or any other app), the music has less bass than the original clip when I play it directly in the browser.

Does anyone know if this is a result of quality loss from using the plugin?

  2. Sometimes you will also get Boong Boong ringing Water Ripple Effects if its ealy aac with mp4. Youtube had a buggy version of ffmpeg.

  3. I just tried a different ripper (mp3 Rocket) as well as getting the actual music separately from music websites. They all sound the same when playing in Media Player.

So my conclusion is that the YouTube videos I've come across are bass-enhanced somehow.

Bass-enhancement (I would say Boong Boong ringing Water Ripple Effects)was a free gift from buggy ffmpeg compiled with faac, When Youtube got ffmpeg compiled with faac they thought they reached the top of the mount. With a reason or two ffmpeg dropped faac for no further streaming competition. Now, when I look or sneak into ffmpeg source code, I really do not know where to start and I get dizzy. Or, it might be the way Advanced Audio Coding should be over my head that I could ever understand.

Boong Boong Effects still persists, but still someone here will say AAC is the best.

If use use the video downloadhelper firefox plugin and tell it to just download (i.e. do not convert) it shouldn't to anything to the audio.

I've downloaded video from youtube and saved the audio stream a lot of times. There are things on there you just can't get anywhere else I know of. But the audio quality is usually pretty poor. That may well be 'enhancements' done by the uploader.

DownloadHelper simply downloads the files stored on the server. It's no different than copying the file from one drive to another. It has absolutely no effect on the sound or video. If you hear any differences between playing the video in a browser and a media player the differences in the players.

  7. DownloadHelper does have an option to convert downloaded video and audio. It requires some sort of conversion program to be installed. I can't say I've ever installed it or used DownloadHelper for conversion myself. http://www.downloadhelper.net/install-converter.php
