  2. DVD region code and PAL/NTSC issues. Your symptom sounds like PAL/NTSC.

Here's a more useful answer. But it would really help to know what country you live in as I am just having to guess.

I guess your UK DVDs are region free because they are playing at all. The black and white stripes running up and down means that your DVD player is sending a PAL signal to your TV and it doesn't understand it. Your only hope of getting these to work is to check the Toshiba and see if you can change the video output setting from ANY or MULTI to NTSC. If your DVD player does not have a video output setting that you can change or it's already on NTSC instead of ANY or MULTI then your Toshiba can't convert PAL video to NTSC TV output. You'll have to buy a converting DVD player. Some Philips DVD players sold in the USA and Canada can still be made region free and can convert between PAL and NTSC. Check specific models BEFORE you buy though to be sure of this.

  4. I'm trying to play DVDs also that are not intended for my region which is region 1.i have the panasonic DMP-BDT320.A member named NIK NAKK(sorry if I misspelled)has a hack posted for the DVD player which uses the one for all 7140 which I have.his post doesn't accept questions so thiught if try to ask here i followed the instructions step by step but I think I'm doing something wrong because I can't get it to play other regions and I'm wondering if once the one for all is programmed and the player is powered on and the keys r pressed in the order he has if the player screen is supposed to go blank and basically it loads back up the screen only stays blank for about 20 seconds tops but when I insert a region 2 disc it says its not compatible on one and the other just says "no play".sorry for long post been trying to hack this player for a few days now any advice would b greatly appreciated.thanks

If your DVD player has such settings they'll be in the setup menus, probably on the video section.

Because computers don't care about NTSC/PAL or region codes.

Well, they (PC's) do care about region codes but not format, IE: PAL/NTSC.

If you're just going to create another DVD from the ripped DVD, don't bother with all the converting (AVI, MP4) in between. Simply burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a new DVD, using Imgburn. The new DVD will also be region-free.

(Yes, I know it won't solve the PAL/NTSC issue, but BaaGGHo hasn't yet said whether or not his DVD player and TV can be switched to handle PAL.)

No, the comptures don't care. Only licensed DVD player software cares. Unlicensed players like VLC will play any region.

Press the setup button on your remote control. Or whatever button takes you to the DVD player's setup options. Players sold in North America often don't have any PAL/NTSC settings and will only play NTSC discs and only output NTSC signals.

  14. Try all the suggestions from other members. Also look for the hack for your model number.

You bought $50 worth DVDs for kids, How come you did not bought cheap DVD player for kids?
    Advice:
Take your Let's Count - Basic Counting DVD from UK to Wall-Mart, Best-Buy or any other store.
Ask sales person for a cheap unbranded player around approx $20 which can play your DVD.
    Buy if it works.
Later on you can buy a second-hand TV so kids can enjoy DVDs in their room, and you two can enjoy in living room. Everybody is happy.

enim - MOST DVD players sold in the USA and Canada CANNOT be made region free. Your advice is simplistic to an extreme, but yes, buying a player that really can be made region free AND (very important) can convert between PAL and NTSC would solve the issue. The problem is that it's quite difficult to find such players in North America. Hollywood forbids such players from being made and Sony and Samsung, to name but 2 major manufacturers, are more than happy to make sure that their entire lineup of players can't be made region free here. You can't just walk into Walmart, BestBuy, etc. and count on finding such a player. Even among the few manufacturers who still make such players, like Philips, they officially deny that any of their players can be made region free in North America and they have to act like the region free capability is an accident. That's how powerful Hollywood is here. What someone needs to do is look at, say, the BestBuy or Walmart website, get the model numbers of current players like those made by Philips, and research here in the DVD Players list to see if that player has a working hack listed for it. Even if you find a hack, you have to be careful because sometimes the manufacturers will put new firmware on the players and the hack won't work any more. I promise you that if you go to BestBuy or Walmart and ask a salesperson if a player they sell can be made region free that they either won't know what you are askingabout or will just lie to you to get a sale.

Yes, people living in the US either have to research which models have the ability to convert from PAL to NTSC and can be made region free by applying a hack (then hope the hack they found actually works) or buy from a specialty retailer selling region free DVD and Blu-Ray players.

These are examples of the kind of specialty retailer I'm writing about:

    http://www.world-import.com/dvd.htm

  17. Note that region free hacks aren't a convenience feature for end users. They exist for the convenience of the manufacturer. So they can manufacture one model and ship it anywhere in the world with the right region code.

    Late to reply but...

Yep, it is a software issue more than a hardware issue.
But I remember back in the day when you used to have to use special software to run in the background or flash your drives to be region free so I was probably thinking along those lines.

I forgot newer software like VLC ignores region coding.
