I've been reading and reading and I seem to be going in circles. I guess I'm using the wrong search terms coz i keep coming up with "convert to mp4" and such.
What is the best format for a full, best video/audio quality or no compression, dvd rip? Literally a duplicate of a dvd without converting it to mp4, mkv, etc.
I've heard of iso, vob, video_ts, and others.
Also, what are the best freeware applications (Windows and/or Mac) for extracting the full dvd?
What if it's region coded?
I know how to convert to mp4s and other formats, but ripping the initial dvd is something unknown to me.
Thanks for any help and sorry if I asked something that seems obvious. ><;;

The original DVD with it's VOBs, IFOs and BUPs. You may or may not want to remove the junk, such as the warnings, logos, trailers, some extras, unused audio languages or subtitle languages.

Do I have to worry about compression or any loss of video or audio quality with any of what you suggested? I'm quite DVD ripping stupid. ==;;
Also, what will the resulting file formats be, if I may ask?
Thanks for your reply. I'm looking into those applications right now. -
DVDFab HD Decrypter might try and either shrink or convert your DVD if you're not careful. Just be sure to use it only as a decrypter. Maybe there's a guide around here...
This should do it:
http://www.dvdfab.com/tutorial/DVD-to-DVD-Full-Disc
DVD Decrypter can only decrypt, either the full DVD (File Mode) or the movie alone (IFO Mode). After decrypting the DVD to the hard drive, VobBlanker is often used to remove the junk (FBI warning, trailers, anything you don't want or need). -
I've been playing with DVDFab HD Decrypter and no matter what combination I select I keep getting a trial alert. "You are going to try 'DVD Copy' option." I've googled to make sure I was selecting the right options and I still get a trail alert. Is it something with the application...?
Also, when I followed the directions for the full dvd copy it didn't have the movie and there was a strange buzzing audio problem.

Another problem... I've tried doing the full dvd copy with DVDFab HD Decrypter and not only is there a weird audio problem the main menu doesn't show up and I can't play the movie.

I seriously hate to be a pain, but I think I'm having problems of a different sort.
I've tried DVD Fab HD Decrypter, DVD Smith, and some random programs and all of them seem to create unplayable versions of dvds files. I tried a different DVD (Les Misérables) which I just got from Netflix and even that was messed up.
In some cases the dvd menu would load, but I was unable to select later chapters and in other cases the audio was messed up.
Could there be something wrong with my dvd drive and not the disc or program?
Just spitballing hoping to figure it out. Thx. -
How exactly are you viewing these copies that are supposedly messed up?

If you are doing what you describe you have done....it works and has worked for millions of people daily, and has worked for decades. Maybe it's a "Mac thing".
-
Huh. Well, ok then. I guess I've just got some really bad luck. Thanks for all the replies even though I'm still kind of stuck. I should probably look into getting a Windows in the future just for all these instances where "it's a Mac thing" keeps popping up. Sometimes having a Mac isn't all it's cracked up to be. :/
Thanks again.
