How to copy a DVD9 to DVD5 with menu & extras using DVD2ONE.

Tools required:
Part 1 - DVD Decrypter (Or other DVD ripping software)
Part 3 - Ifo Edit
Part 4 - DVD2ONE
Part 6a - Make-It-Easy (If you download this you do not need IFO Update)
Part 6b - IFO Update (If you download this you do not need Make-It-Easy)
Part 7a - RecordNow Max (Use this rather than Nero)
Part 7b - Nero (Use this if you don't have RecordNow Max)

For this guide I am going to be making a backup of "The Matrix" but you can use it for any movie. This guide is only for people that want to create a backup of a DVD and keep both, the menu and extras.

This Guide is Split-up into the following parts:

Part 1 - Rip the movie to the harddisk drive with DVD Decrypter.
Part 2 - Create suitable folders.
Part 3 - Create IFOs with Ifo Edit.
Part 4 - Convert the .vob files with DVD2ONE.
Part 5 - Rename and move .VOB files.
Part 6a - Update the IFOs with Make-It-Easy.
Part 6b - Update the IFOs with IFO Update. (Provided by nutty1)
Part 7a - Burn to DVD with RecordNow Max.
Part 7b - Burn to DVD with Nero.

On the sections where there is a "Part Xa" and a "Part Xb" only choose one of the parts.

PART 1 - RIP MOVIE TO THE HARDDISK DRIVE WITH DVD DECRYPTER.

Startup DVD Decrypter.

1) Select [Mode -> File].
2) Select [Edit -> Select All].
3) Confirm destination drive is correct.
4) Select [Decrypt].



PART 2 - CREATE SUITABLE FOLDERS.

Go into the movie folder that you ripped to your harddisk drive, in this case "THE_MATRIX".

1) Create a "VTS_XX Part 1" and a "VTS_XX Part 2" folder (Replacing XX With apropriate Number) for every set of VOB files that you want to transcode. (alx uses "VTS_XX-IN" and "VTS_XX-OUT" for the folder names, what ever you decide to call it doesn't matter as long as you are consistent.) If VTS_05 VOB set was only taking up about 50MB then you might not want to transcode it, in that case just leave it in the "VIDEO_TS" folder and don't make folders for it.



2) Cut VTS_01_1.VOB and move into "VTS_01 Part 1" (Don't Copy VTS_01_0.VOB).
3) Do the same for the rest of the VOBs and the rest of the folders and they will look something like this:



4) Leave all the other files within the "VIDEO_TS" folder, It should look something like this:



PART 3 - CREATE IFOS WITH IFO EDIT.

Startup Ifo Edit.

1) Select [Create IFOs].



2) Set it out like below and choose the first VOB file within "VTS_01 Part 1", After it is complete do the same for every set of VOB files that you have.



3) After all that is done go thought every "VTS_XX Part 1" folder apart from "VTS_01 Part 1" and rename every VOB file to "VTS_01_X.VOB" (Don't change the number where I put X) For example, I will have to rename the following files:

VTS_02_1.VOB -> VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB -> VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB -> VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB -> VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB -> VTS_01_5.VOB
VTS_02_6.VOB -> VTS_01_6.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB -> VTS_01_1.VOB

PART 4 - CONVERT THE .VOB FILES WITH DVD2ONE.

Okay this can be the tricky bit, you have to look at the size of the "VIDEO_TS" folder and every set of VOB files and then work out the sizes to convert them to, they will be something like this:

"The Matrix" DVD = 7165MB Need to get down to 4472MB (Amount to cut 2693MB). Go into properties of the movie folder i.e. "The_Matrix" in this case to find out size of entire movie.

"VIDEO_TS" folder = 55.9MB (Approx).

"VTS_01 Part 1" folder = 538.6MB (Approx) New Size 250MB.

"VTS_02 Part 1" folder = 5261.3MB (Approx) New Size 3500MB.

"VTS_03 Part 1" folder = 1008.5MB (Approx) New Size 500MB.

New total size after transcode = 4305.9MB (I like to keep it under 4400MB just to make sure but a DVD can hold 4472MB).

UPDATE: alx has a program here hosted by snakedjip which can work out the sizes for you

Now Startup DVD2ONE.

EXAMPLE 1:
1) Select "VTS_01 Part 1" folder here.
2) Select "VTS_01 Part 2" folder here.
3) Input transcode size that you worked out (In this case 250MB)
4) Then select next and select the subtitles and audio you want to keep (the more you select the lower the bitrate of the video), then transcode it.

EXAMPLE 2:
1) Select "VTS_02 Part 1" folder here.
2) Select "VTS_02 Part 2" folder here.
3) Input transcode size that you worked out (In this case 3500MB)
4) Then select next and select the subtitles and audio you want to keep (the more you select the lower the bitrate of the video), then transcode it.

...Continue until you transcode all the sets of VOB files.



PART 5 - RENAME AND MOVE .VOB FILES.

1) First rename all the VOB sets in the Part 2 folders to what they should be, e.g. Go into "VTS_02 Part 2" and rename all the files from VTS_01_X.VOB to VTS_02_X.VOB (Don't change the number where I put X)

2) Now cut only the VOBs in the "VTS_01 Part 2" folders into the "VIDEO_TS" folder. Do this for every "VTS_XX Part 2" folder.

3) The VIDEO_TS folder should now look something like this:



PART 6a - UPDATE THE IFOS WITH MAKE-IT-EASY.

If you do this part, do not do "Part 6b".

Startup Make-It-Easy.

EXAMPLE 1:
1) Select the "VTS_01 Part 2" folder.
2) Select the "VTS_01_0.IFO" from within the "VIDEO_TS" folder.
3) Select Update.

EXAMPLE 2:
1) Select the "VTS_02 Part 2" folder.
2) Select the "VTS_02_0.IFO" from within the "VIDEO_TS" folder.
3) Select Update.

...Continue until you do every "VTS_XX Part 2" folder.



Some people have reported that using Make-It-Easy can cause problems, here is a fix by alx.

Startup IFO Edit

Do the following steps for every IFO that you just updated with Make-It-Easy within the "VIDEO_TS" folder.

1) Open the .IFO file. (For example "VTS_01_0.IFO")
2) Click on "VOB Extras"
3) Set all settings according to the "VOB Extras" Window graphic below.
4) Click "OK" and wait.
5) Save the File (with the same name, and answer 'yes' to save *.BUP)



PART 6b - UPDATE THE IFOS WITH IFO UPDATE.

If you do this part, do not do "Part 6a".

Startup IFO Update.

EXAMPLE 1:
1) Select [Browse] here and select the original IFO. (In this case "VTS_01_0.IFO" from the "VIDEO_TS" folder)
2) Select [Browse] here and select the authored IFO. (In this case "VTS_01_0.IFO" from the "VTS_01 Part 2" folder)
3) Select [Mode] here, then Select [Adjusted Cell Mode] if not already selected.
4) Select [Options] here, and make sure [AutoCorrect VTS Sectors] and [AutoAnalyze Original IFO] are selected.
5) Select [Update IFO] here.

EXAMPLE 2:
1) Select [Browse] here and select the original IFO. (In this case "VTS_02_0.IFO" from the "VIDEO_TS" folder)
2) Select [Browse] here and select the authored IFO. (In this case "VTS_02_0.IFO" from the "VTS_02 Part 2" folder)
3) Select [Mode] here, then Select [Adjusted Cell Mode] if not already selected.
4) Select [Options] here, and make sure [AutoCorrect VTS Sectors] and [AutoAnalyze Original IFO] are selected.
5) Select [Update IFO] here.

...Continue until you do every "VTS_XX Part 2" folder.



PART 7a - BURN TO DVD WITH RECORDNOW MAX

If you do this part, do not do "Part 7b".

I recommend using RecordNow Max because I haven't noticed any problems with it while copying DVDs but you can use the recording software of your choice (I have noticed problems with Nero and some DVD players so I recommend using RecordNow if you can).

Startup RecordNow Max.

1) Select [Data].
2) Change [Volume Name].
3) Select [Add Files and Folders] and add ""VIDEO_TS" folder.
4) Select New Volume Under [Multisession].
5) Click the red circle.



PART 7b - BURN TO DVD WITH NERO

If you do this part, do not do "Part 7a".

I recommend using RecordNow Max because I haven't noticed any problems with it while copying DVDs but you can use the recording software of your choice (I have noticed problems with Nero and some DVD players so I recommend using RecordNow if you can).

Nero has a inbuilt option for "DVD-Video" but I have noticed that it doesn't work for every DVD player so i'm going to give two methods in the hope that one of them will work for you.

METHOD 1

Startup Nero and close the wizard if it opens.

1) Select [DVD].
2) Select [DVD Video].
3) Select [New].



1) Drag the "VIDEO_TS" folder to here.
2) Select [Write CD].



1) Select [Write]



METHOD 2

Startup Nero and close the wizard if it opens.

1) Select [DVD].
2) Select [DVD-ROM (UDF)].
3) Select [UDF 1.02].
4) Select [New].



1) Drag the "VIDEO_TS" folder to here.
2) Select [Write CD].



1) Select [Write]

Had a question about part 5 of your guide...
Do you match up the folders with corresponding IFO's. Like VTS_2 part 2 with vts_02_0.vob? VTS_3 part 2 with vts_03_0.vob.
Sorry, this question may be dumb, but I have never tinkered with IFOEdit. Thanks for the help.

Ehh i'm not too sure what you are asking, the "vts_02_0.vob" never leaves the VIDEO_TS folder. you are only meant to take all the vobs starting from "vts_02_1.vob"

Ahh I think I get what you are talking about.

In part 5 when you are using Make-It-Easy you pair up the folders to the coresponding ifo.

for example:

"VTS_01 Part 2" with "VTS_01_0.ifo"
"VTS_02 Part 2" with "VTS_02_0.ifo"
"VTS_03 Part 2" with "VTS_03_0.ifo"

...so on and so forth until you do them all. The .ifo files that you are editing are within the "VIDEO_TS" folder.

Yeah transcodes with CCE does look really good but for people like me with a relatively slow processor it takes far to long. especially when you are copying lots of DVDs.

I'm assuming you lose some visual quality if you try to add every thing from a DVD-9 to a DVD-5 disk instead of JUST the movie?

It depends on the disk you are trying to copy.

If you are copying a movie that is a 5000MB DVD9 with 3000MB for the movie and 2000MB for the extras then you could leave the movie at 3000MB and just compress the extras to 1400MB.

I have compressed lots of movies and as long as you don't compress it too much you won't even notice unless you go up to the screen with a magnifying glass.

Glad it helped mate. If there is a small vob set that you don't want to transcode just leave it in the VIDEO_TS folder. There is no need to create folders and run Ifo Edit on a vob set that you don't plan to transcode. I added that to my guide, I forgot to mention it.

I was successful in backing up the movie Walt Disney's Winny the Pooh for the daughter. That was the one with all the VTS's. Works sweet. The only thing that I'm bummed about was even with reducing the extras by 60 percent across the board I still had to reduce the main movie by over 40 percent (3.7 GB to 2.5 GB I think) and when you watch the movie, you can see pixelation on occasion as the characters move around the screen in the cartoon. The extras are SERIOUSLY pixelated, but I dont care. It looks like that when I do it with IC7 and reduce them to 30 percent. The lucky thing is that it is a cartoon and the pixelation looks almost normal. Again, thx for the guide man, it is saaaawwweeeeeettttt. Now I'm stuck on the VFAPI part of the CCE guide LOL. The trials and tribulations never end, do they? HAHAH

Used your guide for the first time tonight. Usually I don't keep the menu or any of the extras but wanted to try it. It seem to go smoothely until watching the movie. The movie works like a champ but if you try to manuely skip a chapter or if you pick a scene from the menu it just goes to the begining of the movie and starts over. Am I missing something?

Hmm it sound like you didn't update the ifos properly in Part 5 of my guide, I have copied lots of DVDs using this method and they all work fine. You need to update the ifos so that it know where the chapter point in the file are.

I get to the point of running DVD2ONE and it gets about 57% done and crashes. I'm assuming there is a bad sector produced running ifoedit, or something like that. Is there a way to fix them?

I'm going to try to redo the process, but was just wondering if maybe this has happened to anyone before and they could help me steer clear of this problem occuring.

This is my first try with it, so I could be messing something up, but I don't think so. It is an episode disk (six feet under), I can't see how that would make a difference, but I thought I would through that out there.

I ran the disk through DVD Decryptor again and ran it through ifoedit again and it bombs at 57% again. Asking to send an error report or not.
I seem to get this way too many times doing this running TV Captures through TMPGE.

I think that the problem is that you don't have visual basic runtime installed. goto the microsoft website to get it.

Hello Capitola,

Well if you have windows hiding the file extensions then just ignore the .vob part when renaming as they will be .vob already.

The reason this part is in the guide is because if the files don't start with "VTS_01" then DVD2ONE won't process them. You don't need to rename the VTS_01 files because they are already VTS_01 but you will need to rename the VTS_02, VTS_03 and so on..... depending on how many VTS sets there is.

To make things simple, I only "transcoded" the VTS_01 VOB files. There are VTS_02 VOB files I left alone because they are not big files as advised by part 2 of your guide. By compressing the VTS_01 VOB files using DVD2One, I had the whole project down to under 4472, therefore should fit into 1 DVD.

My problem now is at part 6, the burning stage where I don't have the luxury of burning softwares other than the latest version of Nero. The program gave me a warning right at the start: DVD-Video files compliance test failed. I continued anyway. The result is, chapters or titles doesn't seems to follow each other. I had to manually change/restart to jump to next phrase. I am redoing the whole process, but I wonder if I have messed up VOB, BUP, IFO files or if it is simply a Nero problem....

Interesting guide, but why should I not copy the VTS_XX_0.vob file into my Part 1 folder? Whatever I leave in VIDEO_TS will not be transcoded, but in my case the 0.vob file is about 500 mb, would there be some issues if I include 0.vob along with the rest when creating IFOs/transcoding?
