Where did they come from....
Where and HOW did someone come up with the idea of putting all the keys where they are ?????
And WHY is it better than ABCDE......
If QWERTY diddn't come out would everybody think nothing of typing on a ABCDE keyboard????
Just a thought..........

I believe that the QWERTY layout dates back to the days of early typewritters. The layout is actually designed, believe it or not, to slow your typing down: In the olden days, if you typed too fast then the typewritter would jam up. Why havent they been phased out? Too expensive I guess - Not only the cost of replacing the actual keyboards, but imagine how much the retraining of typists would cost et cetera.
It is merely a design that has remained with us since the early days; the keyboard everybody grows up with. There are better layout schemes, but I think that the QWERTY shall remain the de facto keyboard design for a good while yet. -
I could be wrong, but I remember reading a magazine article about it once....
