I had an anime .mkv file with .ass subtitles on it. If I play the .mkv, all the subtitles plays fine(Opening, Main dialogue, Ending & Preview).

I then tried to extract the .ass subtitle using MKVextract 2.2.2.9 with default settings. However, the .ass file only contains the main dialogue subtitle which was weird. Opened the .ass file using Aegisub and it doesn't contained the Opening, Ending & Preview subtitles.

Well I also tried to remux the .mkv to another .mkv with the same video/audio time length, the results were the same as above, only the main dialogue while it's not properly timed(delay).

Not sure what's causing but the original .mkv file also had an xml(chapters) included on it.

Any ideas how to extract the missing subtitles?

  2. After you have extracted the files using MKVExtract, what format is the movie file?
Is it possible the main subs are burned into the movie and that the Opening, Ending and Preview subtitles were added as an afterthought, or by someone who was trying to be helpful?. Obviously you didn't make the original yourself or you would know. After extracting the MKV, does the movie continue to play with main subs even after you remove the sub file from the folder?

The movie file was h264. I'm pretty sure the subtitles were not hardburned because if I disable the subs, all subs from OP/ED, main & previews doesn't show up.

All the anime mkv episodes are put into one folder. It also includes an OP & ED mkv files. Here's the tricky part. If I copy and paste an episode outside of the folder, the total time is less compared to the one inside the folder because OP & ED are not shown. I think it is connected to the xml file embedded on every mkv files. Well it is a little difficult for me to extract the subs without adding the OP/ED subs and re time it. Also, the preview subtitles are no where to be found as well. I don't know how the encoder arranged this but it's very technical.

Is there a hope for me to extract the subtitles without doing much editing on OP/ED? I don't even know where to get the previews subs. It's killing me lol. I hope I don't confuse with my explanation.

  4. It sounds like you might have an mkv with ordered chapters

You can try mkvcleaver or the original mkvextract (not mkvextract-gui2) , you might have better success

  5. Perhaps MakeMKV can isolate the component parts and give you the option to section the file.
Worth a try if you run out of options.

Tried mkvcleaver and it's asking if I want to load/unload associated files? I clicked "yes" and "no" but still it doesn't extract the whole subs.

Tried makemkv as well. It seems that it cannot read .ass saying ".ass is not recognized".

Is there a way to reverse the ordered chapters? A program that automatically merge the OP/ED or something similar?

  7. extract them separately from the intro and ending

The intro ane ending are encoded separately, once. Each individual episode links to those (this is a space saving mechanism, so you don't have to encode , say 10 intros and 10 endings for 10 episodes ; only 1 intro and 1 ending)

I don't know of any automatic way

Here is some more info and a mini guide of how you would merge the intro/ending with each episode manually

Yup, I do get the point of the encoder. Well I was kinda hoping those OP/ED linking would be included in every episode when extracting the subtitle but I don't want to do it the longer way which was to manually paste every OP/ED subtitles into the main episode subtitle.
