  1. I would like to organize my .MTS files by creating an Excel document which would contain the file name, the size of the file (in bytes), and the length of the file (in minutes and seconds), as well as my own brief description of the video. I can do this manually, of course, but I need something that does the work for me. I keep my video files in some folders (Windows 7). The file length doesn't show by default, but I can easily change the folders so that the length is displayed. But I need a way to access that information.

I can use a DOS command to accomplish some of this. In DOS, I can go to my targeted folder and use 'dir > filelist.txt', which will create a file with the name, date and time created, and size (in bytes). But it doesn't access the file length, and I can't figure out how to get it to. Is there a DOS command that can access the length? Once I get things in a txt file, I can import it into Excel.

I've also tried something crazy - taking a screenshot when the targeted folder is open, turning that screenshot into a PDF file, and then using a program to analyze the PDF and convert it into an Excel file. But it's not perfect, and it's too labor-intensive.

Does any one know a way to make an organized list of video files like this? Is there a better way to do this, or a program that's already made to do this? Thanks for any help.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but this program is very fast and cataloged the videos on my drives in just a few seconds. Since it is a Excel program, you can modify the results and add what you want. It does show the size of my video files, but I don't have any .mts files at present, so unknown how they will work. It also shows the path to the files, helpful if you are using remote servers.

I have a regular movie file program, but this is much faster and easier if you don't need too much info.

  3. Thanks Redwudz. I downloaded the XLFileLister program and tried it out. Unfortunately, it give the same results - the file name, date and time created, and file size, but it doesn't produce the file length. You mentioned another movie file program. Would that be worth trying?

I use: http://www.binaryworks.it/extrememoviemanager/ But it gives me much more info than I need.

There appears to be some MediaInfo add ons that can give you the size and running time.

This one seems to work fairly well: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Other-VIDEO-Tools/Batch-Media-Info-Supporter.shtml
I tried it once, but not really familiar with it. You should be able to convert the output to an Excel usable format.

If you wanted to make your own customized version to read running time, you might look at this discussion: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=139739
