Ripping DVD/BD clips for Filmquiz

Hallo,

I already composed a Movie quiz with DVD clips ripped from DVDs. Right now I'm using Nero Recode 4.0.4.100 because it has an option 'Trim movie' so you can directly rip the clip from the DVD in VOB without any recoding (with AnyDVD to do the DeCSS) much like in DVDShrink (but this is too old and sometimes produces errors with more recent DVDs).

My problem is that for the nex quiz I want to rip clips from BD's because most new films I buy are on BD. I checked Nero Recode 12 (the last version) but the 'Trim Movie' option doesn't exist anymore.

So my question is: does anyone know any other programs that allow you to directly rip clips from BD or DVD in their original format without re-encoding?

Nope. I have not seen anything like dvdshrink or nero recode for blu-ray yet. I'm trying dvdfab copy now but can't find any trimmer.

I've read the other tread and that other guy 'Harojan' had the same problem, maybe for a demo disc or a movie quiz, makes no difference really. The biggest problem is that allmost all programs are focused on making backups of complete BDs which is cool but if you only need a clip it's an incredible waste of time to first encode the WHOLE movie to MKV and then cut out a 1 min part with AVIdemux. It will work, sure, but if you have to do this for 140 films, years might have gone by before you ever get to composing the quiz.

For the moment I'm using Nero Recode/AnyDVD/ConvertXtoDVD and Nero Vision to compose DVD VOB fragments in a very convenient and user friendly manner where I only have to convert to a specific output file in the end (m2ts, mp4, mpg,...). But DVD won't be around forever and I'm only buying BDs anymore coz the price difference between BD and DVD is getting smaller by the day.

Technically it should be possible for someone to make such a program. A BDShrink to replace the defunct DVDShrink if you will

It's the layers of protection (and structural protection) which makes it impractical to manipulate anything but the entire movie.
BDs are a whole different beast. DVDs don't come close. Anyone regular here knows how difficult it is to make a collection of clips...so they don't do it. Hence, the limited number of suggestions.
And there is a 'BDShrink' (see BD Rebuilder)...it just doesn't have a cutter yet.
Cross your fingers the author incorporates one in the next build.

I've read this book BD Demystified and indeed BD is technically allot more complex than DVD and I consider it a small miracle that the guys of Slysoft figured out how to circumvent the encryption system which was supposed to be uncrackable. Thats the general media problem: on the one hand I welcome the huge quality improvement and extra features of BD but on the other hand the overprotectiveness of Hollywood makes it very difficult to exercise your fair rights like watching a film you already paid on another device or to cut out a clip for a movie quiz.

Also if one wants to use clips from films for educational purposes (e.g. in Filmschool), they can't even do it unless they ask them directly at the studios but imaging doing that for every single clip if they even get the permision.

So let's hope BDRebuilder gets a cutter option
