Hello,
What is the best way to extract a clip from a commercial DVD to upload to YouTube?
I'm familiar with iMovie when it comes to importing individual homemade video clips, yet I'm unclear on how to do this with a full DVD with menus and all.
Thank you.

Maybe mpeg streamclip, open the first main vob from the dvd, cut, save, and upload.

I agree with Baldrick -- for simple cuts like that, MPEGStreamclip is a great choice. You will almost certainly need the MPEG2 component from Apple, however. Not expensive, but not free either.
