  1. Ive just got a new rig consisting of dual Xeon CPUs and am looking for advice on the BEST encoding tools out there that will take advantage of both CPUS... at 100%? Ive tried numerous ones out there but most max out at about 30% usage. Im ripping DVDs and encoding, any useful apps mentioned would be appreciated with thanks.

  2. x264 should be able to use your cpu power assuming your decoders are fast enough and you are not using some not multithreaded filters / scripts that slow down the whole process.
Otherwise do it like most people do simply run multiple encodings at once,... (so normally all tools that use batch processing should be able to max out your cpu power)

Also in general there is no BEST encoding tool especially if you don't restrict what you want to convert to what,.... and even if you do, good to produce something that can be called really good you normally need a user who knows how to use the tool, e.g. avisynth it self isn't good or bad, it all depends on how you use it,..

  3. Ive been using xilisoft dvd ripper/converter which is probably the best so far, Ive had 16 multiple files encoding at once, but dont see the performance shoot past 30% at all - thats with CUDA enabled too. I noticed alot more ram was being utilised that normal too (8gb while enocding out of 32gb) so thought thr ram was encoding rather than the cpu.
Other titles tried include winmx, dvdfab, magic dvd ripper, format factory, handbrake, ripbot - none get past 30%
This is encoding a dvd vob file of around 1gb to a mp4 file around 300mb

  4. "thats with CUDA enabled too" -> CUDA will take over work for the cpu, so it should lower the cpu usage,...

What is your target format? mp4 is a container which can contain quite a few audio&video formats,..
(btw. using avisynth mt with e.g. qtgmc eates quite a bit cpu power,..)

  5. ill check into the cuda option, not sure about the container as the encoding options are purely marked as mp4 with no further info (that I can see anyway). Do you have a dual xeon yourself? Do you recommend any must have programs?

With 16 input files being read and 16 output files being written the hard drive is probably the bottleneck.

Handbrake with x264 encoding should do better than 30 percent. Unless you have some other bottleneck.
