How To Add MPEG2 Playability To A Mac?

I'm helping a friend of mine back in the states edit some DVDs that he is making (VHS to DVD) in a Magnavox DVD recorder. He is a professional musician so he uses a Mac to use Cubase....standard operating procedure. I know ZERO about Macs....and I'm guessing he only knows how to operate a Mac...he doesn't know the finer detailed aspects of Mac or computing in general.
I talked him through simple edits with AviDemux, we imported VOB files into Avidemux and exported MPEG2 files(both with LPCM audio and MPEG audio(48k) ) and his mac refuses to play them.
In AviDemux he has VIDEO on both the VOB files and the resulting MPEG2 files....bit no audio.
Quicktime refused to do anything with the MPEG files.

Aside from him downloading VLC for Mac....what else can he do?

quicktime requires mpeg2 component for playback (not free)

VLC can only play it (not really edit it) ; but aside from vlc, he can download another player like mplayer osx extended

Apple's MPEG2 component makes everything else possible. It's worth the small expense. MPEG Streamclip (for example) will then be able to convert the video and audio into MP4/AAC.

The proper method is to do the editing before the conversion to DVD as that is a delivery format. However, it appears as though your buddy doesn't have an analog>digital media converter and is using the VHS>DVD recorder for this purpose so he's hobbling himself. In this case the MPEG2 component from Apple will be the proper workaround.
