  1. Hi, can somebody please help me change region on philips dvp3990. I tried various solutions but the remote control does not have a number pad. So entering numbers is out of question unless i find a button to open a text box of some kind.. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you..

I think there was even another thread on this same player in the past couple of weeks because I specifically remember being absolutely amazed that Philips made a remote without numbers on it. Philips has always had a reputation for making consumer friendly players and I consider a remote without numbers to be very consumer hostile as you cannot jump to specific times without being able to input numbers. The guy in that other thread didn't have a solution either as nobody in that thread had any info on how to get a remote with numbers that would work with his player other than to speculate that maybe another Philips model's remote with numbers might work. I suppose you could send a private message to the guy in hech54's link and ask him how he did it so you can post it for others to benefit from. We get asshat posters all the time like that guy who ask for help and when nobody has any solution to their unusual problem, they come back say "I got it working!" and never give any details so anyone else can benefit.

There's a link in the other thread referenced in hech54's post above where the guy says he got it to work. I just assumed that it was more stuff about entering numbers, but it's actually a way to unlock the player without using numbers at all. Take a look.

I do want to point out in case you don't know that some region 1 (USA and Canada) DVDs will not play at all if you try to play them on a player in region 0 mode. It's called RCE. Soms studios use it and some don't. Basically a few years ago a decent number of European DVD players could only be put in region 2 and region 0 mode and nothing else. So RCE uses some trickery on the disc to get the DVD player to identify what mode it is set to and the disc will only play if the player is set to region 1. If you live in the USA or Canada, my suggestion is to leave your player in region 1 mode and only change it when you specifically need to play a DVD from another region.

  6. thank you all for the replies. i think i shall return it to the store. i was told clearly that it could be done. i just spoke to the philips authorized service (where i was told it could be done if i could not manage it) and was told they do the same as i have done so far... look at video help forums!.. i'll get one where they'll guarantee the multiregion option. i live in europe, but my kids videos are all from the states.. cheers..

  7. Done it !............... The tray had to be open...... and then...

    1. Select SETUP then press OK (via the DVD remote control)
    2. Using the arrow down button highlight PREFERENCE
    3. Press NEXT, PREVIOUS, NEXT, PREVIOUS (the >l, l<, >l, l< buttons in the bottom of the remote control ).
      • Your current region should show on the TV screen
    4. Using the arrow down button select region code 0
    5. Press OK
    6. Press the ‘HOME’ button
