I want to create subtitles for videos that I have recorded or ripped directly from a DVD, but the video's when loaded in Subtitle Workshop play upside down. I did some searching and found some mention of certain video cards not working properly with Subtitle Workshop. One fix that was mentioned was to change the hardware video accelaration settings to maximum. I tried this with no luck. I am currently running a ATI 9200 Series video card. I also tried putting in am older GeForce 2 card that I had and this card had the same problem as well. Also all recordings are mpeg2. Recordings made on my JVC DR-M100 play fine, but recordings made with my DVC-II, Panasonic DMR-E55 play upside down in Subtitle Workshop. Any ideas? Thanks!

Never seen or heard about that before, but I've never had luck with mpeg2's in Subtitle Workshop. It works best with AVI files.
DVD Architect is probably the easiest to make subtitles when your source is mpeg2.

Vertical flipping is generally a result of an bad YV12-->RGB colourspace conversion. How to stop it happening though? As said I don't think subtitle workshop is really designed for MPEG2. Do you know what decoder is being used?

I don't know about the video being upside down, but i just finished using Subtitle Workshop for adding lyrics to an hour and a half music dvd and it worked fine.
So i dont think using mpeg2 is a problem

As long as you can see and HEAR what is going on, you should still be able to add your subtitles as they will be saved as a seperate file and not affect the original video at all, you add the subtitles in at the authoring stage.
Although i guess it would suck to have the vid playing upside down.

I'm having the exact same issue. Plus this damn program won't open m4v/mp4 created from imovie. Any solutions? Surely there must be some new insight 7+ years later.

  6. Subtitle Workshop uses DirectShow to display video. Use a different DirectShow MPEG 2 decoder. Try ffdshow. It also has the ability to flip the frame if it's upside down.

For MP4 and M4V files you need a DirectShow MP4/M4V reader/splitter. Try Haali or LAV Filters.
