First I want to apologize if this has been posted already. I did use search bar with no luck and not sure what exactly to search for.
I'm trying to do this now that I have a Haupauge HD PVR but I'm not sure what the best color settings should be in the program that came with it (Total Media Extreme) I'm using defaults right now to test it. Here's my biggest problem where I need help.
What programs would I need to cut certain areas out of video and then convert it into a smaller sized avi file to be played back?
Any advice will be much appreciated![]()

Try Sony Vegas or Virtualdub with plugins.

I think you will find that what you are trying to do is in violation of Netflix's EULA, and can be considered illegal.
Plus, what's the point if you can stream it again any time you want? Unless you intend to no longer pay for the service, in which case it most assuredly is illegal.

It's not that I don't intend on paying fot the service anymore but they take off shows all the time and there is a particular one that is older that I would like to grab off there before it's removed and this show you cannot "buy" or I would.
I thought this site was all about this kind of thing and helping others rip/edit ect...
I always see people posting new ways to break encryption from newer movies and such...Would that not be considered "illegal"
Same goes for ripping cable^
Look, I'm not here to argue whether what I want to do is legal or not. I'm just asking the community here for a little help. -
Hi, I record netflix, (what I want to keep) using nintendo wii to play the netflix which goe to my vcr, which then goes to ATi TV Wonder Pro Pci tv tuner/video capture card to computer. I use windows media encoder 9 for capturing. Are you trying to crop the video or something else? As for converting, I think it best to capture at the highest quality as I had not done that before and the results were badly compressed video. So I am capturing to .wmv, and a 2 hour movie is like 1.39 gb. Not sure about the colors though, but your are capturing from ps3 which is high def?

Tedbundy - By the way, really, that was the screen name you came up with? Kind of hard to take you seriously.
It's NOT illegal to record cable TV shows anywhere, unless maybe some 3rd world country has a crazy rule. And "ripping" does NOT mean recording or converting, no matter how many people think it does. Look at our glossary section to see what it really means.
There are actually very few shows on Netflix that truly cannot be purchased, but since you do not wish to name what it is, we have no way to "fact check" your claim.
Breaking movie encryption is iffy in that in some countries it is legal to do so for your own uses. In the US the situation is nebulous with it being, in theory, illegal to do so even for personal use thanks to the DMCA. Yet the MPAA has NEVER brought even one individual to court on the issue out of fear of setting a precedent that would rule it legal as in the infamous Sony ruling back in the old VCR days.
Recording Netflix is actually pretty stupid since you could just rent the DVDs and rip those and get better quality, but again we have no way to validate your claim that this mystery show is ONLY available via streaming. -
Ok, the part about taking things off and not being able to get to them makes some sense (assuming your account is still active).
Ripping & converting is taking something that you bought in one format and having it be available in another format. Netflix is cleary using a "rental" model, so there is NOTHING that you have bought.
And it's not similar to basic cable or OTA, where those shows are broadcast a a certain channel & time, freely, and you need to use your right to TIMESHIFT (see Betamax case). But, not counting your excuse, that's not the case here.
You may not be here to argue this or not, but we as helpers cannot do something which can endanger this site or the Videohelp community, and if something crosses over the gray area into illegal territory, it's more than likely that we can't or won't help in those instances out of self-preservation.
Technically, you probably can do it via analog methods as mentioned before, but that does lose a good deal of quality. However, if your intention is truly to TIMESHIFT, having it at low quality is better than none at all.
BTW, did you ever look at your EULA?

No, I've not looked at it. and to be honest it's not even just about netflix. it's something that I want to do in general with capturing from my cable box all the stuff that I miss while I'm at work so that I can easily put these smaller files on a HDD and watch on a day off.
I said netflix because 1. some stuff I want to have to watch later if they take it off before I have time to watch or if I like and want to see it again. 2. it's also for cable and I figured that the method would be the same as it is for Netflix.
I do understand your point on putting this site at risk by this and that wasn't something that I thought about.
