  1. Hope someone can help me on here, I've looked all over the internet for help on this so I've come here.
I have a few tv programmes on my pc which are AVI file, so I've put them on a usb stick and played them on a ps3, the quality is really good, but when I copied them on to a DVD the quality isn't as good. How do I get it to be the same quality as I would like them on DVD?

    Thank you for any help!

When you say copied to dvd what do you mean? Did you just burn the original avi files to the disc as data? If so they should be exactly the same.

Also what type of files are these? Are they high def? When you "put them on dvd" did you actually convert them to a standard definition dvd? If so then they will not look as good as the original since you are changing the resolution.

You will need to let us know more about the processes you used to help more.

If you indeed made a dvd out of them (a video_ts folder and burnt to disc) then you may have either put too much video on the disc and were forced to lower the bitrate which would make them look worse or they were converted from high def to standard def or both.

Please fill us in a little more.

Edit - if these were made into "regular dvds" than you can mitigate the damage a little by putting less on a disc, probably no more than two hours or so. You can definitely put more on a disc its just that to do so you have to lower the bitrate and that will impact the quality. However if you are going from high def to the standard def that dvd requires you will lose quality no matter what. It can still look good but just not as good as the original source file.

  3. I'm not too good with stuff like this, I know bits on how to convert and copy etc. I burnt the avi file straight to a DVD, what I keep noticing is people saying that they copy the avi file on to DVD as a data file instead of burning it, will this keep the same quality as it being on a memory usb stick?

Yes. It is the original file with no alterations.

It could perhaps be a bad disc.

Do you have the same problem on more than one disc? It could be a bad batch of discs if its on multiple discs.

I would use either a different batch you have on hand or when you have some time buy a new batch and use that. Also use imgburn (freeware program) to burn the disc - highly recommend here on this website).

You should use either taiyou yuden (available online) or verbatim discs for the best results (not the verbatim life series, lower quality).
