  1. Hi,

so far i've using Aegisub to superpose text and even converted-to-font images over something i want to hide on replace on the video but this time its a job Aegisub cant handle nor Virtualdub logo filter since the logo image will be moving through many frames. I want to superpose a sequence of images (call it an animated image) over a video andi would like to know which is the most suitable, yet simple program to do this?

    Thank you.

  2. most simple would be a video editor e.g. sony vegas, premiere pro

you can do it with avisynth as well

  3. Hi,

i have sony vegas but i really dont like it at all so i tried installing avisynth instead. However, seems like its not a standalone program. Do i need a separate program in order to use it?

    Thank you.

  4. There is no real GUI. You're not going to like it if you don't already know how to use it. It's all done by scripting. It might take you a few hours or days just to learn the basics . (But if you know the basics then it's fairly easy by using overlay() )

It will take a few seconds in a video editor. You just drag the image sequence on top . Your requirement was most suitable and simple. A video editor like vegas is your answer - especially if you want the "logo" to move or animate

  5. Thank you for the advice. I have sony vegas but i dont use it because i find it quite defective. Do you know about a good tutorial on how to achieve this with sony vegas? i googled it but the first result i got is this topic! and all the others are irrelevant.

    Thank you.

defective? in what way? Vegas certainly has quirks and issues, but it works fairly well and is easy to use . For something as like this it's almost overkill

Honestly it's so straightforward that you don't need a tutorial, that's probably why you can 't find any.

The top track is the image sequence . Drag your image sequence there. Bottom track is the video. Drag your video there. Position and scale the image sequence where you want it (e.g. rigth corner, bottom left etc...). That's it

  7. For example, i find weird you cant save as a direct stream copy, but anyway, i will give it a try. Also, i need that one portion of the image disappears as part of the animation sequence. Is that possible with Vegas, too?

    Thank you!

Well you can direct stream copy with certain types of compression. Like DV-AVI for example, XDCAM, MPEG2. It even smart renders these formats (you can make edits, and only the few frames within the cutsite are re-encoded , the rest are passed through) .

I'm not sure what you mean by "disappears", but you can trim the image sequence to wherever you want e.g. you only want it to appear between 5-10 seconds that sort of thing. But what do you mean by "one portion" ? Do you mean a fragment, like the top half. Maybe you should post the image or at least describe it more clearly what you want to do. Vague descriptions mean you get vague help.

Because that's the domain of a utility. Not an NLE.

Vegas is better at compositing an unlimited number of tracks, though.

  10. Okay, first problem. Seems like Vegas wont open mkv files. Doesnt it support them?

Sony is a media company, so why would they support a format popular with bootleggers.

If you want to use X264 in Vegas, there are plenty of Mp4 options available.

  12. So it doesnt support mkv? ... see? this is why i think its a defective program.

  13. Not directly, but you can frameserve in with avisynth and avfs . You've got a bit of reading to do, but there are guides

Or you can convert to something else like a lossless intermediate (e..g lagarith, huffyuv, ut video codec)

mkv isn't really a "professional" format, so no real editors support it directly

vdub doesn't support mkv either. Not without frameserving or other plugins. Is it "defective ?"

  15. Or maybe i should just convert to avi? Im trying to do so with virtualdub but im getting this error after virtualdub crashes:

An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'FFInputDriver'...
    ...reading address 13577000...
...while reading 1602 raw audio samples starting at 3364842 (stream length=4897680) (Audio.cpp:656)...
    ...while running thread "Dub-I/O" (thread.cpp:163).

Can you figure out whats about?

    Thank you.

What it's about is it's choking on your file. Why don't you try AviDemux 2.6?

  17. Yes, sorry. Seems like my source file is corrupted. I will try to get another one and keep you posted.

You better double check if Vdub supports MKV/X264. I'm not up to date on that stuff.

  19. maybe it's "defective"

Something is "defective" only if then function falls within the intended scope of the program. I wouldn't say vdub is "defective" because it can't do non linear editing, or motion tracking for example. My dishwasher can't make coffee either - is it "defective" ? It's not supposed to do those things

It does with 3rd party plugins , otherwise it would be "defective"

supercain: do you have the image sequence already made? Does it cover exactly what you want, or do need to prepare it and animate it? Because vegas wouldn't be my first choice to do those things. Can you describe in more detail exactly what you are covering up or trying to do ?
    Quote Quote
  20. No, the image is not animated yet. Its just a still image and I was expecting to animate it by applying transformation effects, such as shrinking, rotating and all those just like you do on aegisub with the subtitles, so i need to have the video on the background to see what im doing. So isnt vegas after all the best choice?
    Quote Quote
  21. what are you covering up? how long is the sequence ?

after effects would be my 1st choice for that sort of thing

you can do it in vegas, it certain has some tools to do it, but it will be harder

and of course impossible in something like vdub

  22. Its a screen title with a logo in Japanese that sort of "unshrinks". I want to cover that logo with one in another language but following the same sequence so its perfectly covered. The sequence is 2 or 3 seconds long. I know after effects but i dont have it and it would take me time to learn it. Vegas on the other hand, i have use it many times before. For another kind of tasks though.

  23. Okay, i think its easier to understand if you see the actual video and image i want to use.

Can you be more specfic on exactly what you want to do ?

You want to replace the logo , correct ? What about the "omega" symbol in the back ?

The rotation in the x-axis can be done quite easily with any NLE or AE (as it flips up), but there is more to this sequence than just that:

    a) there is a light flare and lens falare at the beginning - so if you cover it up with a new logo, the light will be obscurued as well. You would have to re-create that intro sequence

    b) there is a star logo that animates over and inserts itself onto the characters (this has to be added separately)

    c) near the end, there is animation of each of the characters - you would need to redo that as well (you can't use a single image to animate separate characters)

    d) at the very end, the characters transition into a flare. This effect is very suspicious for trapcode starglow (a plugin for AE)

    e) the existing small characters have a starglow effect that obscures the existing "omega" part of the back logo - so you have to replace those as well

All this is easier to do in AE than other programs. In fact, I bet the original was done with AE, with either optical flares plugin, or knoll light factory and trapcode starglow . It's almost easier to do it from scratch.

So you want to cover the animated logo with a static one, right?
    Quote Quote
  26. The logo goes over the blue logo of the video and in order to do that it has to have the same animation. Also, see how the star comes from offset and lands on the logo. Thats why i need the uppber corner of the image to fade out accordingly so the star can come on top of it.

Ok, then put your static logo behind the animation, and use the Bezier mask to cookie cut it. you can size it with the track motion tool.

Another option is to use the secondary color corrector to create the mask. In Vegas, this project is straightforward and easily accomplished using standard methods.

If you need hand, I'll do it for you and send you the project file pre cooked. I'm in the field, so later tonight. We Vegas owners help each other out.

  28. Thank you, man. Because im having a problem. Seems like my video is a little too heavy for Vegas. The image jumps and goes delayed when i play it. I really doubt its because of my computer, since i have an Alienware Aurora. The file is near 1GB. Is it okay?

    Thank you!

  29. I can tell you right now it's not going to go the way you want it to.

It's almost impossible to do this correctly in vegas alone - but I'd love to see budwzr salvage this one with vegas alone without hitfilm

Did you read the list of issues above ???

Or do you not care about the beginning and ending ?

Even if you just focus on the red star section, you can't just mask it out. Because there is partial tranparency at the edges (the old blue characters are seen underneath)

Trust me, if you want it to look half decent, it almost has to be done from scratch . The only thing you can really salvage from the video is the first frame (the blank omega symbol)

What format did you convert it to ?

If you're only doing this intro title sequence , there is no reason to load the whole video
