Having problems with just one DVD from Netflix (1997 film Picture Perfect). All other DVDs and BDs I have rented play fine., so do streaming movies.

This one film shows the splash screen full screen but the film itself plays with 6" black borders on all four sides, top bottom left and right, so the image size is so small it is impossible to watch on our brand new UN32ES6500 Samsung 1080p TV.

Settings are 1080p output from the BD player at 16:9 original. TV is set for 16:9. Samsung tech suport was completely hopeless.

Is there possibly a problem with how a DVD is encoded? Netflix tech support says it is a 1.85:1 format. In that case I would expect the image to fill the screen left to right and have a slight black bar top and bottom.

Any suggestions or explanations welcome. thanks.

    Here's the deal

This is non-anamorphic encoded widescreen. This is an old DVD from the early years of the format. It's a single layer disc. So the old hands around here have already realized from what I said what you have. What you have is a DVD encoded as letterboxed widescreen in a 4:3 window. So you have black bars at the top and bottom because it's widescreen and on the side because it's 4:3. "Impossible to watch"? Look, I get that this is less than ideal, but grow up man. It is what is. If you don't like it because you're one of those "Must... see ... everything ... in ... widescreen" people than just push the freakin' zoom button on your TV remote and zoom in on the picture to make it fill more of the screen. I've dealt with various models of Samsung HDTVs and they all have this feature.

Yeah, if it's a 16:9 DVD. It's not. It's widescreen 4:3 and plays on your widescreen TV set just the way it's supposed to. The joke's on you.

@jman98 thanks for the explanation. That makes sense now.

The reason I said it is difficult to watch is that we have a 32" screen and my eyesight is not the best, so with the image only 21" wide it is not at all easy to see from across the room.

I would have though the Zoom option would be available but it is grayed out in the Picture SIze menu.
