  1. I am in the process of converting my VHS tapes to DVD. I created a DVD+R with the converted video, and the .VOB files show up in Windows Explorer.

The DVD+R plays fine on a cheap, older Phillips DVD player, but the Sony BDP-S185 Bluray player does not recognize the disc. The player is listed as being DVD+R compatible.

I burned the disc using the VHS to DVD software (Honestech VHS to DVD Deluxe 5.0, and with CDBurnerXP, but both attempts failed).

Is there any way to burn the DVD+R so that it could playback on the Sony Bluray player?

    Thanks.

Use ImgBurn to burn. I believe it is now defaulted to burn +R discs as DVD-ROM (bitsetting - Book Type). Or try quality Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden -R disc also burned with ImgBurn.

See this recent thread where a similar problem was solved by using higher quality media.

Sony models are fussier than those by other manufacturers and Philips players have always been good with low quality media.

  4. These videos were being burned onto Verbatim DVD+R discs (non-Life Series, with AZO). I thought that these were supposed to be decent quality discs.

....with software that is NOT ImgBurn.

  6. I burned a new disc using ImgBurn, and got the same results - plays on the Philips player, but not on the Sony Bluray player.

I wasn't able to change the Book Type in ImgBurn because it is an Asus burner, which isn't listed as an option.

So you burned the VIDEO_TS folder with Imgburn?

  8. Right, the VHS to DVD Creator software generated the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. I burned these using ImgBurn.

The only other thing I can think of(well 2 actually):
    1) Only load the VIDEO_TS folder into Imgburn(it will automatically add an empty AUDIO_TS folder) and press the calculate button.
The text in the bottom window(log) will show that it is going to be
    Content Type: DVD Video
    Data Type: MODE1/2048
    File System(s): ISO9660, UDF (1.02)
    Volume Label: [Not Configured]
    IFO/BUP 32K Padding: Enabled
    Region Code: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
TV System: NTSC(or PAL - depending on where you live/what you captured or recorded)

If all of that is there and the burn completes normally:
    2) Your Sony hates either +R discs or home-burned discs like OLD Sony players did.

  10. That is the output in the log window when I create the DVD.

It does seem like it is specific to this DVD burner. I tested some DVD+Rs that I had burned with an old Plextor DVD burner, and it plays fine on the Sony Bluray player.

Maybe the maker of ImgBurn will come along and lend a hand. You will easily recognize him. His screen name is LIGHTNINGUK.
    Not kidding.

Sony makes the most consumer unfriendly crap on the planet, so maybe it's some kind of Sony weirdness. What you are experiencing is not typical, hence the lack of some kind of a magic bullet to fix it. Any currently made BluRay player should have no problems playing Verbatim DVD+R discs.

Whether or not they were book-typed normal DVD+R or DVD-ROM and duly finalized. And especially if the book type is duly DVD-ROM.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".
