  1. Has anybody noticed any differences between smart ripper and dvd decrypter in terms of the quality of video in the VOBs? The video quality should be identical right?? Is it possible that one can produce a better video quality than the other? Also, whats the difference between using stream processing and not to use it?

    hwk.

  2. err...all smartripper, dvddecryptor, claddvd, etc. does is just to copy the vobs from the DVD disc to the hdd (w/o the CSS protection on it of course)

there is absolutely no difference at all...however, there could be a difference in terms of ripping performance. for example, dvddecryptor was really good at ripping T2 ultimate edition; however the older version of smartripper couldn't handle it cuz of all the mult-angles

so, it's up to u which one to use...however, u should have a least 2 of them in case 1 doesn't work

  3. dvd decrypter is horrible

i have ripped about 4 dvds using it and they all turned out having the same problem of vobs when played, it will keep repeating certain frame at least about 3 times before moving in to the next frame again

i just later realized it was dvd decrypter that was the culprit because vobs do the same while when i use cladDVD ripped it perfectly

  4. silab, errr....dvddecryptor is one of the best ones out there

i'm guessing u just rushed into using dvddecryptor w/o looking through some of it's options

the reason scenes are repeating is because there are multi-angles in them...by default dvddecryptor does NOT remove them; however, if you goto options, you can enable multi-angle processing

if you would've done this with dvddecryptor, there would've been no problems.

  5. ok, good replies, the reason I brought up the whole matter was the movie "the musketeer" I ripped it using both proggies. I frame served and encoded both sets of vobs. One version was great (smart rip) the other crappy got some blocking during action scenes and generally looks bad. I know that the encoder is responsible for that sort of thing but I suspect that the origianal video from the vobs has something to do with it. Heres my settings:

smart ripper - stream process. just the video and 2/3 channel sound

frame serve DVD2AVI - force film, color space = YUV 4:2:2, tv scale, at this juncture the sound is not relevant, the settings are whatever you probably use

    encoding tmpgenc -
    stream type - mpeg2
    size - 480x480
    aspect ration - 4:3 display
    frame rate - 23.976 fps (29.97 internally)
rate control - 2 pass VBR min 1146, max 2517, avg (in the 2000s)
**keep in mind that I used the same settings and one turned out great
    vbv buffer - 112 kb
profile level - MP - ML
    vid format - NTSC
    encode mode - 3:2 pulldown
    YUV format - 4:2:0
    DC component - 10 bits
Motion search - HIGH but not the highest
    video source type - non-interlaced
    field order - bottom field
    source aspect ratio - 4:3 525 line NTSC 704x480
    video arrange method- center
filters - just source range (2 parts = 2 discs), no need to adjust for interlacing
output YUV data - checked off
no motion search - checked off

are there any suggestions on my settings?

  6. well if that is the case, how would you know if a DVD is multi angle?

Also, how come I never changed any settings in CladDVD and it just ripped the DVD without any problems.

Wouldnt DVD Decrypter be smart enough to adjust the setting like CladDVD?

  7. silab, even if the movie didn't have multi-angles, you can still turn enable multi-angle processing and it wouldn't matter (it'll only remove the multi-angles if there were any)....cladDVD doesn't adjust, it just have multi-angle processing enabled by default

also, the reason dvddecryptor doesn't enable it by default is because sometimes you don't wanna remove the multi-angles....perhaps, a movie like independence day have seamless branching because it has the regular "theatrical" edition and "special" edition....if you were to enable multi-angle processing, you wouldn't be able to use FlaskMPEG to choose which edition of independence day you would want

that brings me to another point, for programs like FLASKMPEG, they don't accept vobs have have had multi-angles removed..so if you did that, FLASKMPEG wouldn't work (in case u needed to add subtitles, etc.)

so, having multi-angle processing enabled or disabled by default doesn't really matter, if depends on you to actually be smart enough and look at the program's options first and see which ones u need and don't need for a particular DVD.

finally, try ripping T2 ultimate edition with claddvd...you'll know how much it sucks compared with dvddecryptor...there are so many multi-angles in that movie that claddvd couldn't handle it, but dvddecryptor ripped it flawlessly
