  1. Hi, I am planning on purchasing a new dvd player for my home. I would like a DVD to be able to play burn vcd, svcd, mp3, etc. I was thinking of getting the Pioneer DV-440, is this dvd player any good? If not then what do you suggest I should get? I do not plan on spending too much on a dvd player..... thanks for the help.

There is a general market rule on this:
    "The cheaper the better"
We don't talking about picture quality here, but for compatibility
Most of those players from china, plays anything.
The picture quality ain't perfect, the hardware quality is typical (some times even low...) and in general, don't expect the most of a DVD - Video with those solutions.
Pioneer models are generally mainstream solutions, with some limitations but much better picture.
Apex/Hitech/Cyberhome/Amoisonic (not that compatible as it seems)/Comet /scot/encore/yokahama/prinotec/ etc are very popular because of the compatibility issues, not picture quality ones.
A good search on the DVD Video database of VCDhelp, is a good starpoint...
