  1. Just bought a Panasonic BD60 (Blu-Ray Player) and the picture quality of DVD playback is a lot better than my other DVD player, Philips 5990. I used to have the Sony S350 (Blu-Ray Player) and it was impossible to remove the region lock. I bought the Philips 5990 so I can play DVD from other regions.

Can you suggest a DVD player which can perform as well as this BD60 and can play other regions?

  7. No, not combo drive.

I will keep the BD60 mainly for Blu-Ray and this 2nd player for DVD, both for US DVD and Asia DVD.

They do sell this Pioneer DV-420V-K in my local Futureshop. Reading the attached thread, looks to me that people prefer this player than the Philips.

  8. It is an excellent player, especially with the firmware upgrade, which in itself does not creat a perfect situation, eg: the list of divx files on a usb or disc does not come up automatically, you have to press menu and a few other small things but overall worthwhile.

  9. So, How good is the upconversion of this Pioneer DV-420V-K? I hope it is better than Philips 5990.

After watching a few DVD in the Panny BD60, I can see that PQ of the Philips is not that good.

  11. Since my TV is a 1080p HDTV so the DVD Player will have to "upconvered".

Victoriabears: Since you own both Pioneer and Philips DVD players, do you see better PQ with the Pioneer?

For the price of the Panasonic BD60 you might as well buy another one for just upconverted DVD's. Best Buy has it on sale for $119.99 till tomorrow. Just my 2 cents!

  13. In Toronto, the retail price of BD60 is $299 (CAN). It is now on sales for $199 and I just bought it a few days ago.

Also, not sure if one can unlock the BD60.

Not necessarily, your TV will up convert anyway - if it didn't you'd have a small video playing in the centre of a black screen.

  15. My TV (Sony 46Z4100) would probably do a better job in upconversion than the Philips.

Too bad I cannot turn off the upconverison function of the Philips.

Sure you can. Just set it to output 480i or 480p.

mis3 - Are you looking for a BluRay player that can be made region free or do you just want a better DVD player that can be made region free? Because it makes a big difference. If you live in Canada or the USA, you have two options for a BluRay player. You can buy the Oppo or the Momitsu (go to http://www.hkflix.com for info) and that is it. Both are region free for BluRay and DVD playback. The Momitsu will ship ready to go as someone has applied a hardware change to the device after the manufacturer shipped it to support region free playback. With the Oppo, you will have to apply a firmware patch on your own to make it region free. No other BluRay players sold in the USA can be made region free for BluRay or even just DVD playback.

  19. Pioneer is definitely better than Philips. The only HD player I've used was a Toshiba HD-DVD player which was better than the Pioneer.

Not any more. There are clones of the Momitsu BDP-899 now, and here's one that's pretty darned inexpensive:

Yup, he's right about that! Below is from AVS Forum Blu-Ray Players thread on Oppo BDP-83:

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15914837#post15914837
Click where it says "SPOILER" and you'll see it.

The BDP-83 will support DVD Region 1 and Blu-ray Region A only. The Blu-ray Disc Association does not allow OPPO to support any region unlocking capabilities, even for DVD-Video playback.

As Blu-ray is a relatively new platform, OPPO wants to make sure they can sell Blu-ray players for many more years to come. They do not want to implement or excise any content control which could jeopardize their standing with the Blu-ray Disc Association.

^^^^Yuh, it includes having to open up the player to make changes to hardware.
IMHO most people won't even wanna do a basic firmware upgrade let alone open up a blu-ray/dvd player.
