    also need to add, that id like to be able to save the desgined cover as a jpeg/bitmap so that i can drag/paste it into my cover printing program!!

  5. I use Photoshop Elements which came free with my scanner, but I don't do original art, just manipulating other images, etc. Do you have any old scanner or digital camera software that has a similar program? I think the full photoshop is still fairly expensive. Even Elements is pretty useful.

    Irfan view is free and might be able to do what you want if its simple cutting and pasting and text.

    I use Discus. It's not fancy but has some easy features for background, text fonts and photo inserts so you can create a quick cover and print. I ueed to use Meritline Glossy lables but it appears they no longer manufacture these.
